Hi all –
I could do with some advice please. Could anyone recommend a saddle which will make my riding more enjoyable? I've tried to go out on the saddle which came with my red Triban 3 road bike but that was too painful. Then I tried to wear in a Brookes B17 but again it was too hard and too painful. I have padded shorts but they don't seem to be helping either. Does anyone know from experience whether a Selle "big bum" saddle works better than a narrow one with a gap in the middle section?
Thanks

The charge spoon is very popular I have one and its good for me. I don't wear any pads.
But everyones butt is different and you really need to try and see what fits you.

A decent local bike shop may well let you try before you buy, there's a post over on the technical board about it. I too have a charge spoon and also trying a second hand boardman that I got off fleabay to see which I prefer, really didn't get on with the stock t3 one. Dhb shorts from wiggle get good reviews and aren't too dear. Also look on the bargain thread as there's something about pbc and vz clothing sales.

You say that you've tried to break in a another saddle but found it hard going too, so I'm wondering if you are sitting in the right place.
Where are you getting the problems?

Thanks Where are you getting discomfort? - I would guess it's your sit bones that are feeling bruised. There are lots of reasons for discomfort ranging from simply not being used to riding to very fine adjustments in saddle, and indeed, as mentioned, padded shorts. Be warned, too much padding in shorts can cause problems, it may allow too much movement (roll) between your delicate areas and the saddle. Some shorts have quite large gel 'lumps', these (I think) are difficult to get on with as they need to be just in the right position under the sit bones. Lots of padding can cause chaffing, which in turn can lead to saddle sores. I have only just managed to get my saddle position and shorts combo where I think I'm more comfortable: Charge spoon Saddle moved forward and down slightly + 1 degree angle up so i'm 'sat' on the wide part of the saddle. I've also changed from cheap shorts I previously owned from MTB riding to Plane X Corsa Bib shorts The padding is quite 'flat' looking and also they are nice and tight so the pad stays put, no movement in relation to my body. Padding looks like this, very similar to Endura:
