Hi All - my 1st post ...
I am seriously considering a Triban 5 as a second bike and I'd be interested in current owners views.
The bike will be used exclusively as a winter trainer on the roads and stuck on the turbo to use when I have the inclination. If it pans out then I'm hoping it would be comfortable enough for some long rides as well - which my other bike isn't BTW.
I only found one review in the mags but everything on here seems to indicate it would be a sound buy, is comfortable for the above usage and is good value...
I'm not too bothered about the inevitable weight increase and TBH the triple appeals (knees) but it seems clear that mudguards like cruds with a 23mm tyre seem my only option for decent coverage. I would prefer 25mm but it looks like only partial mudguard could be fitted. Aside from that I assume that the wheels will be good enough for purpose but that tyres will need changing along with the saddle.
So, comments, views and ideas are welcome !

What is your 'summer' bike if you don't mind my asking?
I've got the Triban 5 and intending to use it through winter and it does the job nicely. Still using stock wheels, tyres and saddle. For winter training the wheels are fine, hubs could do with re-greasing as they often come under greased and over tightened.
If it is going to only be used on the road I wouldn't be put off by only being able to use mudguards with 23mm tyres, I've been using mine on 23mm tyres both on road and on gravel/mud paths which can be a bit bumpy. 25 may be a bit more comfortable, but 23 doesn't seem that bad.
That being said, if you are after a bike purely for winter use it might be worth looking at a cyclocross bike? Being designed for use in wet and muddy conditions should handle anything you throw at it.

Yes, I agree a cyclocross bike would be ideal but they cost more than the Triban5. Also, the used ones seem to be ex-racers.
My current is nothing special its a 2011 Boardman Road Team Carbon, with SRAM Rival, Michelin Pro4 Endurance 23mm tyres and Fizik saddle. The basic worry is the risk of binning it and damaging the frame. Last year was OK though. So was hoping more T5 owners would say something but so far nothing - did i post this in the wrong place? many thanks

Hi Richard, the Triban 5 is a great bike for the money, I have the older T5 rather than the newer T5a. I used it throughout last winter and will be doing the same again this year both out on the road and on the turbo. The difference this year is i've put Shimano RS30 wheels on it and Michelin Pro4 Endurance tyres so i might put my old stock wheels back on for the winter - main reason being the Michelin's are pretty much ready to be replaced so may as well get some more use out of the tyres on the stock wheels (replaces the Michelin's in the Spring) plus the wheels are white so it means more effort into cleaning them after winter rides.
My T5 is my only bike so it's used all year round but looking possibly at getting a new carbon bike before next summer. If i do then the T5 will be used as a winter / commuter bike.
If you're not wanting to use your Boardman over the winter then you can't really go wrong with a T5.

why not use the boardman as a winter bike and use the T5 for summer :-)
