Simple question, when riding on the hoods, can you hover your hands above the the bars indefinitely or do you experience some strain in your core/back muscles?
I can hover my hands for a while but feel like I am falling forward slightly and feel my back and core muscles working.

Can't say I've tried it, what's the issue you're after?
All points of bike contact and geometry are working together with your body position and physiology - also the type of riding / duration, condition and fitness etc.
What's comfy one day isn't necessarily the next, similarly on a short ride v long ride, type of ride and terrain / handling etc. , this even applies from one minute to the next, weather and temps play a part; that's why TT bikes are different to standard road bikes for racers in a tour for example.

having issues with painful hands, not sure if its caused by cycling but it certainly doesn't help. I was unsure as to how much weight should be on my hands. I've been playing around with my position and the most comfortable I can get is with my saddle pointed very slightly down and a saddle to bar drop of about 12cm, for some reason this puts the least pressure on my hands, but I am still unsure as to how unweighted my upper body should be.

Can we get a side shot of the bike? Could be the angle of the bars/hoods contributing to it.
