I've noticed a few people here have upgraded to a full sora groupset. I thought the shimano 2300 groupset was the equivalent of the old Sora. Have I got this wrong? And right or wrong, is Sora really an upgrade from T3 stock? I ask because I was contemplating upgrading to Tiagra next Spring if I can afford it. Full Sora groupset is a hundred pound cheaper so I'm tempted to go for it soner if this is viable. I spose my question is Sora soonish, or Save for Tiagra and wait a bit? Apart from a little chain rub when using large front cog, the current groupset is good enough, I just enjoy upgrading, don't judge me.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shimano#Road_groupsetsLooks like 2300 is the 2010 claris groupset, so sora is one step above. Honestly with the 2013 sora having the same style shifters as tiagra I don't think there is much difference between the two. Others who have upgraded to sora will likely be along to give you their opinion on how it feels compared to 2300, I wouldn't expect it to be a night and day difference to 2300, but actually running a full groupset (I believe T3 isnt all 2300 and has some other parts?) combined with the slight upgrade will probably give you a nice smooth running bike.

Must admit that I've no experience of Tiagra (or 2300 for that matter!) but I have full Sora on my T5a and the shifting is absolutely flawless. I think the Tiagra chainset is ugly as sin, so for that reason alone I'd be inclined to give it a miss. The 2013 Sora on my bike has the dual shifting levers as opposed to the thumb buttons of 2300, so shifting is easy from pretty much any position on the bars.

No experience of anything but stock but obvious difference is number of gears. Stock is 8 speed, sora is 9 and tiagra is 10.

Unless you are adding extra gears then IMO the whole thing is just bragging rights. It's not like any of these "upgrades" reduce the transmission losses and any weight savings are minimal to say the least. Stop playing tunes on your gearboxes and concentrate on pedalling. Can't fault my bargain basement MicroShift and Pro Ounce stuff after 3,200 miles but then I'm no professional and pay for my own stuff.

Partially yes, I'll admit that some of the reason I changed to a sora crank was look of it, I liked the outboard bearings over the inboard square taper BB. But another reason was that the Pro Ounce crank BB combination on MY bike wasn't very good. I had trouble from the outset with the chainwheel (it was out of true) and when it was replaced it still didn't seem to run correctly, it felt like the square taper axle was bending under load. As the Sora cranks were a bargain price at the time (Β£35 I think with the Hollotech bearings!), and I like to play, I bought one and put it on my bike. Like you I can't fault the shifters and didn't feel the need to go to a full replacement as an "upgrade". I just did enough to feel happy with my bike, whereas I wasn't happy with it as 'stock', it's whatever lights your candle I suppose.

Cant fault the T3 stock gears, more than enough for me, gear changing is sweet and crisp.. No upgrades for me, not until broken

My crank has also been replaced, 2 days after purchase from decathelon. And it also isn't true. I think I might just do what you have done. Could you let me know what exactly you had to buy for crank change?

The red T3 is a right old bitsa. The shifters are 2303, crankset Ounce (fine apart from a bottom bracket that feels like it is made of limp spaghetti), front mech is 2012 9 speed Sora and rear mech is 2300 with a Sunrace cassette. People were getting a very good run out deal on 2012 Sora crankset with hollowtech BB which is just nicer to ride and at the prices they were paying really good value. Only change I want to do is put a far less flexible BB in mine, happy with the rest for now. What happens when things wear out is a matter of what will do the job and I can afford. The Claris (2400) groupset is the replacement for the 2300 and is basically an 8 speed version of the 2012 Sora, quite nice indeed.

I've said a couple of times that it is made of an alloy of steel and rubber.

That probably partly explains why many find it difficult to get/keep the front derailleur indexed without rubbing.

Nope, cause doesn't necessarily equate to effect, even if it appears obvious; yep BB flex might cause a little chain buzz at times but I wouldn't say there's a huge difference in anything other than full on torque churning moments, unless passing massive power through the BB, it's not going to cause the front derailleur to clip for more than a split second or two. Summary - most of the whinging about derailleurs is often due to set up and most often due to inexperience in gear selection (IMHO ) .
