OK, so I was in Halfords the other day buying something or other when I noticed a Carrera TdF set up on an Elite turbo trainer. Obvs I couldn't resist a go. I've never been on a TT before, it felt really smooth and I was impressed with the resistance that was possible going through the gears... Anyway, my impressions of the TdF after my five minute spin: the handlebars are more compact, ie narrower from lever to lever which I liked as I think I ride in quite a compact style (for a 6' 5" bloke!) and the gear changes felt crisp and assured. Not a lot more I can say about the bike, don't know how heavy it is, how it brakes or rolls along, but I have to say if they're throwing these out for Β£250 it doesn't seem a bad deal at all for that money. It's T3 all the way for me, of course . Just wanted to come clean...I feel better now .

I'm Capt Slog and I'm a cyclist.
It all started a couple of years ago. A mate was doing some spinning, just stationary like, and he said "go on, try it" and I thought "ok then, just this once, where's the harm?" so I did. And I sort of liked it.
Next thing I know I was spinning everyday, and soon just a few minutes wasn't enough and I went longer each time and then went looking for some harder resistance. I thought "it's ok, I can stop any time" but it wasn't like that, I started missing it when I didn't go on it for an evening, getting twitchy, you know?
Family were starting to notice, well you can't account for where you've been for the last hour and why you're so sweaty and shaking, can you? I tried to hide it but the signs were obvious, running up stairs two at a time and muscles appearing, they were starting to ask questions, but I denied it, it wasn't like I'd got a habit was it?
Then I went and bought my first hit. I managed to find a dealer online and some money changed hands in a back street in Leicester one evening. What I got was a bit rough and unrefined, but I didn't know what to look for. It was heavy man, and the first couple of goes with it made me feel a bit weird, but I soon got used to it and just like the spinning I was always looking for a bit more.
I knew things might be getting out of hand when I got into the clothes. I did some Lycra. I'm not proud of it and when I saw the look on my wife's face, I knew I'd let her down even though she tried to laugh it off.
I was thoroughly 'out' now. I kept buying better stuff; almost every week something new came to feed my habit and the spending was getting out of hand. It's an addiction and I say words like "segment" and "lead-out" which make no sense and I realise that I might have a problem.
I'm Capt Slog. I'm a cyclist. help me.

Thanks for your support!
Sorry to hijack your thread perniciousviper, it was just the way your post was worded that set my mind on that train. As you say, the bike doesn't sound bad for the money (Β£299 it says online if I'm looking at the same thing). No doubt we will be seeing a few of them on the road if the weather stays nice, and a few on Ebay by Christmas.

An ex work colleague / friend of mine on Facebook, who I've not seen in person for a while got all ambitious and bought one in a moment of enthusiasm when in Halfords this summer (he lives in the Valleys) ... as yet I'm not aware he's used it more than a few trips to the shops ; think it was in at the deep end where he lies, he's paddled to the side and opted out I think ... can't ask him on Facebook without looking like I'm winding him up .

captslog Cracking post mate, that's what we're talking about!!! A mate of mine bought the TdF a few years ago when he started out into the world of cycling. I remember him popping round my house on it. Of course at the time I had no interest in cycling so gave it the once over and nodded my approval, it was a road bike as far as I was concerned. When I finally decided it was my turn I did pay the visit to my local Halfords. Sure enough, there was the TdF, on the rack. I have to admit that I thought the colour was quite cool. The "bike specialist" in store showed me round the bike which was priced at Β£329 at the time. I left the store to give it some thought. Pondered it over the weekend than told Mrs Red I was going back down for a 2nd look. Imagine my surprise when I entered the store, gave a nod to the "specialist" who instantly recognised me then noticed the bike had been given a huge price hike to Β£500!!! I informed the "specialist" that although I was liking the bike, there was no way I was going to pay 500 notes as I could go out and buy a Spesh Allez for that price. I left feeling a bit disappointed. I mentioned the ridiculous price hike to my cyclist friend. "Nowt new there mate," he said. "They've put the price up in time for the Christmas market." It was at this time he gave me a copy of Cycling Active which continued the now famous review of the T3. A bit put off by considering buying a bike from a "Supermarket!" but after reading the review and "cyclist friends" recommendation I seriously considered it. Mooching around the house one day in October last year when Mrs Red said "Come on then, let's go and have a look at this bike then." Jumped in the car and hit he M1 en route for Sheffield and Decathlon. What happened next is common to all of us and to cut a long story short, later on I was coming the other way on the M1 with a shiny red T3 in the back of the car and the obligatory carrier bags containing the usual "necessary extras" The rest is history!

I have given up saying "Right, that's everything I need for my cycling bought now".
If Mrs Rossa actually new how much money I have spent this year, I could well be asking fellow forum members if they have any cheap rooms to rent.
