I now spend 90 percent of my time on the drops. However, at the start of the year when I was new to the game and 2 stone heavier I spent 90 percent of my time on the hoods.

You must be fit enough Rocket to be able to be on drops that % fair play to you but im thinking the older the person the less likely they gonna be on drops and more on the hoods. On that basis, perhaps I should fit ape hangers lol

My most common position is on the hoods for general purpose riding. I tend to use the tops when im getting stiff and achey but try to use the drops when trying to get a shift on to cut down on wind resistance.
My problem is being too fat, when in the drops my knees hit my stomach lol

do what works for you!
for me it depends on who im riding with and what kind of ride I'm doing, if I'm out on a fast ride I tend to spend more time on the drops, long rides and a slower pace i'll be up top.
I do however find it hard changing gear while on the drops which is pretty annoying!

Quick update to previous post. I have just had my first decent length ride since fitting spd's to my 5A, (having never used them previously) and found that I automatically used the drops far more - maybe up to 30-35% of the ride? This might just be a result of feeling 'racier'with the shimanos, or getting more used to the bike (I am only about 200 miles in since new)but either way I definitely think with a bit of practice they will get much more use from now on. Also helps with the increasing headwinds...
