It's a noble task cleaning a chain with a toothbrush, something crusade like about it; how long do you take and how often do you do it? Couple of minutes, just spray a section of chain, brush, spray next section etc then wash off. I've found just leaving it soaking in a cleaner / shaking in a bottle doesn't get the bits of crud off very well and uses more degreaser than just a spray and brush. The brushing action certainly gets it very clean. Also I haven't bothered to try to get the original chain link apart, I can be a bit heavy handed so would likely knacker it or weaken it. Prefer not to mess with critical parts that can leave you stranded if they fail.

Not my experience ... I used to brush it and swill on bike then rag it for the first 4 months or so and switched to soaking in cleaner (use it about 3 or 4 times, kept in Marge pot), used to finish with scrubbing in sink but now do final swill via shaking before cloth, as far easier and cleaner IMO ... and without ruining every scrubbing brush in the district ... but if it works for you, that's fine.
