Got my shiny new WHITE Shimano R088 shoes today from Wiggle but unfortunately no R540 pedals as they are out of stock. Nearly there.... Shimano sizing seems small as per various threads so I ordered a size up and they are bob on.

Unclipping tip!
Just been out adjusting my cleats. I thought I would mention this for anyone just starting with spd pedals.
When you are coming to a stop and need to unclip (try to do it in plenty of time before you stop).
The easiest way to unclip is when your leg is out stretched (pedal down) as you can get more twisting force on your ankle than you can when you have your leg bent (pedal up)
Hope this helps anyone having any unclipping issues.

I bought btwin spd-sl pedals for 25 bucks out of decathlon, have nothing to compare them with but they do the job for me.

Finally joined the ranks and maiden 21 mile ride went without incident. Too early to tell what difference they will make.
For those who are interested I weighed things.
ShoeZone trainers 918g, Shimano RO88 shoes 695g Stock pedals with toeclips 426g, Shimano R540 pedals 330g
Weight saving 319g.

Been out for my first clipless ride tonight with some m520's and cheap and cheerful aldi cycling shoes.
Went without incident, hard to tell at this stage if it made a difference - was more focused on being ready to unclip when needed!! Definitely not as daunting as is sometimes made out though.
Will put in a few more rides and maybe look at buying some better shoes once clipping in and out is second nature.

SPD with the sh56 multi release cleats will be your friend! Tension adjusted right down on both sides of the pedal remember...superb and so so easy

I see lots about getting out of them, which is an issue i don't seem to have. My problem is getting in the bloody things, especially in a hurry.
I usually stay clipped in on the right pedal when i need to stop at a junction or similar. I set the right pedal high and get a good start and then spend seconds trying to find the left pedal. One of the problems i have is that the pedals (540sl) seem quite stiff on the pedal axle. If you move them so that the weight is at the top and then let go, they turn slowly as if damped.
This means that they don't fall to the correct point as readily as they should, and are not always at the optimum place to engage with my shoe.
There's been times when I've stood on the pedal to make a quick getaway and come down on the top tube with a thump as my foot slips of the pedal. (glad of the padded shorts then I can tell you!)
