Newbie here- be gentle. Bought my T3a in July and nearly 300 miles clocked up - loving it (even with achy thighs).
Took the plunge today and fitted M520 pedals and bought some BTwin Rockrider SPD shoes. Just back from a 17 mile jaunt and definitely felt they made a difference. My average speed was nearly 2mph quicker than normal for the same sort of effort. Felt a couple of muscles that I didn't know I had and looking forward to getting out again. No clipping disasters....yet. I only had to unclip a 4 or 5 times and these were predictable, non-emergency affairs but with the pedals on the wimp setting I think (hope) I'll be OK. I have had some heavy duty metalwork implanted in my spine so could do without a heavy fall (and I am the wrong side of 14 stone and the wrong side of 45yrs).
Anyone doubting whether to move to clipless - be encouraged by my first clipped-in experience - I'm really glad I took the plunge and glad I went for MTB type pedals and shoes as I can walk in them and clipping is not difficult.
I have found something in cycling that I used to find with running - when I have the right kit and feel good about yourself, I gain a psychological boost and then "feel" more like a runner/rider - this in turn helps motivate and inspire and for me this is a major boost.

I am Ian, been out twice so far, they do make a diff, well they must do, first night got 10 PB's on strava lol , i think i can accelerate quicker once i get locked in and there is a slight improvement going up hilly areas but with being an ex smoker im still finding them a bit difficult, on flats i seem to be able to keep a better rhythm so go that wee bit faster, still need to remember im clipped in sometimes ^^ , another thing that is hard is ... if i stop half way up a hill it is difficult to get started off, dont know if there is a technic for this ? Prolly check youtube for hints

I'm going to take the plunge and order some Shimano R540 pedals and R088 shoes. Tweeks Cycles seem to have good prices and stock.

Go for it. for security. extra power is questionable. My pal used them and pulled so much he injured himself. Don't make them too tight at first and you'll be fine. I don't pull on upstroke much. I just let my legs do what they want. roadcyclinguk.com/riding/bike-fitting-the-myth-of-the-upstroke.htmlSame as what you said, i dont pull up but i do get slightly better power, not much but it is there and also get that better rhythm which makes for more efficiency thats what i feel anyway.

Similar to you Martin. 2,500 miles in 4 months on the original pedals but my Β£6 ShoeZone trainers have worn through the soles and almost clip themselves to the pedals now.
