This may sound like heresy, but at my level, all chains are possibly equally good? With 9 speed chains, who has the best/simplist system for joining chains?

nope fraid life is not that simple. all chains are not equal even when you take the speed (and hence width) of the chain into account. You can get hyperglide chains for hyperglide cassettes (like my mtb) which change gear really smoothly, or can get chains that have antirust coatings, chains that have better joints to 'flex better' and so it goes on. It all depends on what you want from the chain and how soon you want it to wear out, where you store your bike (mine have to be stored outside) and how often you want to clean and lube your chain to stop it rusting.
On my touring bike I have a Β£4.49 chain which lasted 9,500 miles (8 speed chain but running on a hub so effectively single speed hence the life span). It was in constant use for 12 months and was cleaned and lubed once a week without fail. the bike and I were out in all weathers and the chain was 'abused' desperately. My T3 currently has a Β£19.50 chain (though I only paid half that getting it on special offer) and I would only expect to get around 2,000 miles from it despite almost every other day cleaning and lubing (I do a fair few miles on very dirty roads and prefer to run chains dry than over oiled). My T3 is on its 3rd chain inside 1 year of use - 8 speed and the first 2 were the same chain as my tourer. My mtb, well it is still on the orginal chain - 9 speed and probably won't need another until around Christmas if my mileage on it (currently +1,000 miles in 6 months) remains constant).
As for chain joints - quick links. I like KMC quick link but only on KMC chains. The SRAM quick link on my T3 has been giving me some grief, but I understand that most people prefer the SRAM quicklinks to the KMC ones! my tourer does not use either, I just join the chain using the chain tool and don't have a quick link in it. It never bothered us not having one and probably made for a much stronger chain in the long run.

Life is never as simple as we hope for. I find too much choice confusing, and then I can't make a choice.........

Sram pc850 is what I and lot others on here use, usually matched with sram pg850 cassette and is good as gold. Cheap and power link very simple to put on and off. However like most things on bike. If you clean and look after it then will work well and last long time, if not....
