Finding myself getting numbness in the outer edges of both my palms after 4 or 5 miles of my commute when sat on the hoods.....thinking my stem is too long.....anybody else had the same problem? I might flip it first to see if that helps

You could try rotating your bars upwards a bit. This would reduce your lean to the bars and take weight off your hands. If that is your bike in your avatar then they look a little low but then I'm no expert. What sort of gloves are you wearing? I have some from Lidl claiming to have gel inserts in the palms and have never had a problem

The gloves were some from decathlon when I bought the bike......they have pads on the palm areas but I think your right......when I'm on the hoods all my weight seems too far forward because I'm reaching for them and there isn't really any bend at all in my arms. Gonna flip the stem today and lessen the angle and will rotate the bars a little too....never thought of that.....thanks for the tip. I will post on here after to see how I get on.

You could try a shorter stem, it worked for me. Are your arms close to being locked out when on the hoods? If they are you are almost certainly putting to much body weight on your hands and not enough on your arse. You could also try double taping your handlebars. I always make an effort to move around regularly between hoods, bar top & drops. Hope you get it sorted.

Well I flipped it earlier and rotated the bars up a little......gonna try it Wednesday but think it will still need shorter stem.....its just made the posture of the bike a little more upright.....thanks for the info......might do the bar tape too as it needs replacing after a couple of spills recently :*)

I have experienced the same sensation, the numbness is caused by putting too much pressure on the ulnar nerve, the numbness is a sign of early onset ulnar neuropathy (nerve damage). Trust me, you do not want this to progress into full nerve damage which has put my hands almost completely out of action for 9 weeks now.
I know this might sound over dramatic but seriously I would suggest that you: 1) Stop riding for about a week, let the inflamed nerve settle down. 2) In my own experience it was my riding posture that was more to blame than the bike setup. Do plenty of stretches and core body work.

Well, tried it after flipping the stem.....lowered my seat too which improved the output from pedalling but I'm still over reaching....so looking for a shorter stem.....tried halfords earlier on the way home but they were useless as usual

Your current stem length is stamped inside the clamp area for the bars.
Remove the bar clamp and remove the bars - you will see 31.8 on one side and the length on the other.
