Me and Mrs Red went out for an evening drive tonight.
We passed through Holmfirth, on through Holme then climbed like a mountain goat up to Holme Moss. You may ask what driving a car up a hill has to do with a cycling forum?
It's only one of the very spectacular sections of next years Grand Depart in God's Own County. To many amateur cyclists round these parts, conquering Holme Moss is like a rite of passage from being a newbie to becoming a fairly accomplished cyclist. Peaking at over 1,700ft it's a hell of a climb. It twists and turns regularly combined with a heck of an ascent. The view is stunning though. (unfortunately didn't get the opportunity to snap any pics.) Once at the top by the radio transmitter you then have the pleasure of the descent down the other side. I have to say, it seems steeper than coming up. All the way down I imagined a sea of cyclists weaving down at incredible speeds, all the way down to the bottom
I do think that there will be the need to spend a fair few quid prior to the TdF though. Certain sections are in very poor condition and badly potholed. Due in no small part to the terrible winter which was endured earlier in the year. Should make a fantastic spectacle though.
