I really want to get some and shoes, but I occasionally have to ride 3-4 miles using normal trainers.
Can this work relatively confortably? Anyone do it?

Never done it myself, but can't see why you shouldn't. The pedals provide a decent enough platform to allow you to cycle relatively comfortably, I'd have thought.

You can get SPD shoes which look like trainers and can get some stylish ones which you can walk in. Your other option is to get double sided pedals like these, one side spd, the other flat for normal trainers.

It's possible, I've done it. I'd recommend using the stiffest soled trainers you can get though.
I always wear my shoes now though after not paying attention and having a foot slip when pulling away from lights. Only a pain in the ego.
