I'm not normally anywhere near a Decathlon but at the weekend I will be passing Lakeside so I wondered about my free six month service.
Is it worth having it done? Can you book it for a certain time?

Assume this applies to other stores but Southampton don't do servicing at weekends as they are pretty busy. Best to ring the store to find out if there are any specific arrangements/notice needed. Always worth having someone go over the bike if you're not too sure about things, and if you're not too hot on the maintenance front, see if they mind you hanging around to watch and ask questions. Ben at Soton Decca was happy to explain and show me a few things about removing bottom brackets, etc, which I found really helpful.

Mine comes up soon too.
I can't see me bothering to be honest. I've got Phaeton running as a like it and I'd rather not have it tampered with. As PV points out above, it depends on your level of expertise/confidence at DIY maintenance. I can't say as I'm an expert, but I'm on the bike and know whether it's running ok or not.
BTW. Is this like a car service, where the 'service history' would affect your warranty? There's no record of what they've done as far as I can see.

They only checked the gears and brakes on mine I think... Worth doing if your gears are slipping etc.. but I guess no worry if you dont get it done.. I've called in my local decathlon a few times and they have adjusted them free of charge.. if you sign upto organised rides they have repair tents there too that fix things for free I've also had mine checked there too..

Mine isn't until September but I intend to take it in as I am no bicycle mechanic. It's free so what more can it cost?

I tried to book my in at Wednesbury, but they said it can only be done Monday-Friday and I would have to leave the bike there, which was no good to me as Its about an hour each way to get there and I work all week. Decided to book mine in at Evans cycles as they are only charging Β£10.00 for a service instead of the normal Β£30.00 this month.

Well I tried to sort it out but as above, no servicing at the weekends.
Pretty poor from Decathlon, especially if the warranty is dependent on it (as I am lead to believe).......

That is my biggest gripe. Not enough local branches. There are two within an hour away but 2hrs return trip to give my money away is a bit much. That's why I didn't bother with the 6 month service. I doubt they will do anymore than check brakes are working and maybe adjust the gears and retention the cables.

My service was more comprehensive than I expected, including checking the BB and an offer to check hub grease, which I didn't need as had swapped over to R501s.
It's a large and busy chain of stores, so no one should expect it to be run on a LBS business model. The staff I have encountered have been top notch, endlessly patient and free with their time.

I know nothing about bikes (Feel bad because I work for TISO and have to cover shifts in Alpine Bikes) but when I try and change to the biggest selection on the triple crankset

My service wasn't up to much as the area manager was inspecting later on that day and they were busy getting ready. I was a bit peeved about it but this has been more than made up for by the other work the lads in Belfast have done for me. Agree PV on the staff as I have said on here many times. Guess I got the wrong day sh1t happens.

Shouldn't be the case but you're right, sodafarl, timing can help. Was just thinking also that I've been fortunate to have had three free bike maintenance (rather than service) opportunities in recent days. Two came at Sky rides with Halfords mechanics (initially sceptical but checked at both, and they said they only send the staff who are either in-shop bike specialists, or bike department managers), while the other was through work - a LBS comes in from time to time as part of our green travel policy and offers free maintenance. As a result of some tips from this latest 'inspection' (felt guilty taking up the guys time when there were clearly other bikes in greater need, so asked his a couple of questions instead) I have my gears running the best yet - no front mech rub in any rear gear on any front cog, with nice 'notchy' double 'down' changes on the rear cassette with an extended lever push (obvs just one with a smaller push). Proof of the pudding will be what it sounds (and feels) like off the stand tomorrow morning. Appreciate I'm fortunate that my work offers this, and that two Sky rides were in travelling distance...

What kind of company do you work for? That's very orward thinking of them and what a great perk. We couldn't convince them to bring in cycle 2 work let alone anything like that.

@cyraxdotnet - the NHS. The companies involved pick up some business from some of the staff so they can afford to commit to a few free days. Agree, it's very good and I'm fortunate. Assume they'd do it for any reasonably sized employer or group of smaller employers.
