Ive been going over and over all my options and think I will go for a used garmin edge when one comes up. I have been considering using my Samsung Galaxy Note with ANT+ adapter and IpMan from google apps. This apparently works well and you can use cadence and heart rate sensors. I would also have to find a waterproof mount for the note and I'm a little worried about the vibration that would be subjected to it. I enjoy using Strava for the segment competition when I do my short ride or two during the week and I record my longer Sunday ride aswell both using my note. I already have cadence and heart rate sensors and although I dont yet look at the data seriously, I'd still like to use them So all things considered, I think the garmin will be the best option........or maybe the note.....no, the garmin... My self irritating research will no doubt continue Thanks for your help I have been down that road mate. iphone with bikeconsole case. It was just too much of a hindrance when sprinting. My knee would hit the case and it was just too big and that was an iPhone 4s! Best think about a Garmin or something down that road. Smaller waterproof (to a point) position better on the bike (out front for me) expensive yes but it aint your phone if it gets nicked or in an accident! These factors made up my mind. Garmin 510.

Well after much deliberation I'm the proud owner of a garmin edge 305. I got a used one for just over Β£40 from ebay. Didn't get a chance to give it a road test over weekend but went out for a quick 10 mins test this evening. I forgot to press the start button so not off to a great start! I can confirm that my sensors from my old count 14 work with the garmin as does my geonaute heart rate strap. Hopefully I'll get out later this week for a better test. Impressed with what I've seen so far though
