Hi all,
I stumbled on your site from some of the eBay item descriptions of some of the bikes (Triban 3 Red) I'm looking at.
I'm looking at getting a road bike for my daily commute, N -> W London, approx. 11 miles, two to four times a week and have already been turned on to the Triban 3 Red from all the reviews I've read and the cost/value. I've been using my Kona mountain bike with smooth tyres for about 10 years.
My question is, is the Triban 3, or a road bike in general, suitable for the stop/start nature of London commutes? Most descriptions of the Triban 3 state that its ideal for 30km - 60km rides, which to me sounds like the open road.
I don't travel at the height of the rush hour which would suck all the fun out of the journey in my opinion, but with the traffic lights and road conditions it isn't exactly open road conditions.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Cheers,
John

Interesting post, John. I guess many of us ride roads which allow some fairly free wheeling without too many interruptions. I commute on mine in fair weather and there isn't too much in the way of stop-starting, that said my route has just changed so early days and haven't found the best way yet.
I'd say a T3 would be fine - you'll be frustrated by traffic/lights whatever bike you ride I suspect, a T3 will just make you later, less.

Just make sure you get some decent rubber to help prevent punctures. Gatorskins are good I believe. I use vittoria rubinos which have been great.

Thanks for the info, I'll stick with the plan to upgrade.
On a side note, it seems like Decathlon have stopped selling the Triban 3. Is this a recent development? I guess it will push up the price of 2nd hand Reds and also excludes taking advantage of my companies 'ride to work' tax scheme.

There are other threads about availability on here, but yes, there are no guarantees in finding one. Some people report racks of them in their local Decca, others none. Pot luck I'm afraid. Always worth ringing your nearest store and getting some local intel on expected stock levels.
