Just been out for a 30 mile jaunt with his mate on his Trek 1.5. We swapped bikes for a fair period and I can honestly say that I really couldn't notice the difference between the two bikes (and neither could he!) Wasn't totally convinced that the tiagra is a massive step up from the Tribans basic Shimano gearing, although the Tiagra probably needed a service. The only noticeable difference was the braking performance, but i'm sure that can be sorted.
So all in all, massively impressed with my humble b'twin (ok, I have put some shimano 501's on) but have no idea where the Β£500 difference in price is??!

That's a good comparison and one I always make. "Can I justify xyz price jump for what I'm getting and for what I'll actually experience". How was it weight wise? That's one benefit I would expect for price tag but the T3 is relatively light for bikes of same price.

Makes sense. Many of the branded bikes (I'm thinking Specialized, Cannondale and Scott here) are so overpriced and built around huge marketing budgets. At the end of the day a bike is just a set of standard components in the same way a computer is, with various companies branding them. Apart from the frame (which is often mass produced anyway in a factory making frames for various brands) there really isn't much difference between the brands. It makes a difference I suppose as to the expertise used to how it's all put together but what I find annoying with many branded bikes is that they put a "mostly" eg Tiagra groupset, then cost cut by using cheaper chainsets and brakes etc just to shave a few quid off an Β£800+ bike. That's why I'm tempted by the likes of Ribble for my next bike, they get a decent frame and forks made but everything else is the full groupset and you specify the wheels and can change some of the other bits like stem, bars and seatpost etc or leave them as the standard. When you can buy a full carbon with the complete Tiagra groupset for Β£840, and tailor it yourself with loads of cassette / chainset choices plus other upgrades, I can't understand why anyone would spend vast amounts extra on one of the expensive brands. I've heard also that Specialized (among others) do not allow their dealers to discount at all, so you'll never get a bargain on one unless it is last season's. The dealer may chuck in a free helmet though I suppose....

Even more reasons to prove that brand snobbery isn't going to make you faster. RED makes you go faster
