On Tuesday (18th june) I went to work on my bike which was starting to become routine. No worries, 9 miles each way easy done, in the evening I went out for another ride with my next door neighbour who wants to get fit again; went for 12 miles and arrived home hardly out of breathe. I was feeling like I'd cracked it and was becoming a cyclist.
The next day I rode to work and it seemed heavy going. what the hell was going on here? I couldn't get any pace, it made me feel tired all day and I wondered if I was overdoing it the day before. The ride back was even worse, I wondered if I was going to get home, but I did so feeling very distressed and quite dis-spirited.
I took a couple of days off the bike, didn't feel like riding, and then was away for the weekend. I started to feel a bit poorly on Sunday, having stomach pains and feeling generally lethargic. I attempted to "MTFU" and tried to shake it off, I'm fit right? that was the whole point of getting the bike and getting out there!
But by this Tuesday I had had enough and went to the doctors. She referred me to hospital with appendicitis ("can someone take you or do you want me to call you 999 ambulance?" )
I'd made the mistake of confusing FIT with WELL (as referred to in another post with SNSSO), and it was this timely self reminder that sent me to the doctors.
To cut a long story short, I'm now back at home with three holes in my gut and light of one appendix after the op on Wednesday afternoon. I've been told it will be 6 weeks before I should think about cycling again and all I can think is all that effort has gone to waste and I'll have to start again.
On the upside, I AM fit, which helped me recover in hospital. Back from the theatre, I insisted I got off the trolley and into my bed by myself to the surprise of three nurses waiting to move me, and was walking around a few hours later.
SIX WEEKS! ah well, I think I might be able to shorten that, what's the verdict?
