hi, im going away for a couple of weeks in july and im wondering how to keep my stamina and strength up for cycling when i get home for the rest of the summer, i hate been away from cycling and then going on a ride and felling like im dragging a lorry behind me. I was thinking about running as it is an obvious alternative from cycling but im not sure on how many miles cycling compares to a mile of running. Thanks for any advice

Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.If itβs preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run, it is not called a bike race, it is called duathlon or a triathlon. Neither of which is a bike race. Also keep in mind that one should only swim in order to prevent drowning, and should only run if being chased. And even then, one should only run fast enough to prevent capture. Just enjoy your break I reckon?

If it's a holiday, treat it as such. Enjoy the break, chill out, have fun and recharge the batteries. Can't see you losing much fitness/stamina over a 2 week period.

Good advice from the big two. It is a holiday, as long as you don't over due it then you should be fine. A week or two off the bike can re-energize your passion for getting back on the bike and pushing yourself even harder. Have a good break!

I think on hols, walking to see the sites and if somewhere warm, perhaps just a 15 - 20 min easy swim is all I'd be after; if I took my bike then that's different but I'd likely pootle about rather than bang out the circuits. What I might do as getting older now is get the mrs to teach me some better pilates / stretching exercises.
There's a few places in France I wish I'd taken my bike and perhaps I will at some point - first place is a lovely spot in the Loire (with an 'e' on it).

One of the good things about this cycling game we are all so addicted to, is that you can go on your hols and treat yourself to what you want to eat and drink. Then when you get home you will burn it all of by simply doing something you really enjoy. Have a great holiday mate.

Dude, its only a couple weeks. Enjoy your holiday. Relax, unwind and just have fun. You can exercise both arms by alternating which hand you hold your pint in, leg exercise.. walking to bar for variation.. walk to a slightly further away ice cream shop see thats three ideas already!

There's some good points made above but i'm thinking the same thing - i go away for 11 nights all inc and fully intend to take advantage of all the great food and drink the hotel has on offer. After this i will have stacked a few pound back on and i do tend to lose some of my fitness quite quick.
There's a few options for me, the hotel does have a gym, i could do some swimming, they hire mountain bikes, probably walk everywhere while we're away, running is out of the question. Put it this way, i won't be going mad but do indent on saying a little active whilst away.

I'm having a forced couple of weeks off my cycling due to a slight misadventure on my other bike (1200 suzuki) and to be fair I was worried about losing my fitness level, but having a rest with my feet up is giving me chance to plan my next routes to explore and as they say 'a rest does you good' - have a break, enjoy yerself and don't punish yourself for missing what is only in reality a few days cycling in a year!! :-)
