Wow I bet most of you missed the ITV news yesterday and today. They reported on the councils that are biding for money to improve the roads and spoke to a number of cyclists and car drivers. What got me most was todays report (Tuesday) An idiot driver said that cyclists should be paying road tax!!! Obviously she hasn't a clue what she is talking about and the reporter too because he didn't correct her! ITV News Central special report: encouraging cycling in the Midlands Special Report

probably because its still called "road tax" by many out there instead of what it actually is which is "emissions tax". Until people are corrected this they'll be wanting horse riders to staple tax discs to their steeds

As a cyclist, I do pay (ROAD TAX) I tax my car, I tax my BMW Motorcycle. Therefore if I am not using the car or motorcycle does this mean I can have a rebate?? I don,t think so.

Its actually officially called Vehicle Excise Duty. Its just another tax that goes into the Treasury coffers and has no direct relationship with money spent on building and repairing roads.

We don't call council tax "window tax" so I don't know why it is still referred to as "road tax",when it was abolished in 1937. Anyway, around 10% of cars (low emmissions ones in band A) don't pay any VED either, so should they be banned too? Despite the fact that they do still pollute, and cause congestion?

Sloppy journalism, lazy thinking + what cocopops said. I've paid duty for 27 years continually, sometimes up to 3 personal vehicles at times, not to mention company ones, any anti want to compare a spreadsheet? Only the likes of Chris Evans need apply.

What really irks me is the see a public event, sometimes with lots of children running around, at which police are patrolling on horses and they're dropping their loads wherever they see fit. Granted, it's nothing but the horses' nature to do it. But the rider never dismounts and cleans up the mess. If, however, at the same event, you're walking with your dog, and in sight of a policeman, the dog considers 'it's time' and you walk on and don't clean up, then you will be fined. The act of messing up the road or footpath is only the animals' nature, but the comparative size of each is huge and there is no provision made for it.

Ah how apt, we're onto horse & dog sh1t3, interesting, sums up this thread succinctly! Suggest people write to their MP as I suspect no-one here actually gives a flying fig.

Sorry, Rad. My main point, before I went into off-topic rant mode, was about 'emissions tax' whatever mode of transport one chooses.

sore point with me, i had a friend who contracted toxocariassis as a child and it damaged his sight, all as a result of ingorant dog owners and their inability to let their pets s**t in their own garden, happier to let the general public deal and suffer with it, completely disgusting we had our village gala at the weekend, the horses left a huge mess in the high street and the gala location however the positive thinking amongst us would be grabbing that for our roses! but to make it relevent, i dont see why, as i keep my bike indoors, not garaged, i should have to clean crap off my tyres because some lazy sod cant pick up the mess, wheels can flick that stuff up to the facial area, not nice and that is why, when on the bike, if i see an offender i remind them that the thing on top of my helmet isnt a light, its a camera - and edinburgh city council are eager to hear from people like me and i am happy to help

Had no idea that you all have such bad feelings on Road Tax!!! Just taking the mick there. Guess its down to the government making it clear what exactly Road Tax is to these nincompoop drivers like this driver on the ITV newsreel. I bet you were they to do so it would cost us the tax payer millions.

Horse manure isn't regarded as dangerous to health though (horses having a plant based diet) whereas dog excrement is more like human excrement (being generally meat based)! Disgusting, and horses don't generally do it on the pavement either where I inadvertantly roll the kids' buggy through it!
