Yeah with a proper fit, riding with your hands on the hoods and braking from there becomes quite natural. Just to throw a spanner in.... Have you also considered a cyclocross bike? Drop handlebars, wider tyres and I'd guess better at road biking than a hybrid. I only mention it because its a fast growing genre that isn't necessarily 'out there' to the un-informed (like me). If you know about it and it doesn't grab you then get yourself off to decathlon immediately!!!!!!!

I did actually think about the Edinburgh Cycling Co-op's cyclo-cross bike (Revolution Cross 1) before I hit upon the Triban. Not sure what put me off, possibly the weight and the steel forks. I live in Edinburgh so might take a stroll and have another look.
I did manage to get to Decathlon and have a quick spin on a 520. Very impressed indeed, in so far as you can tell tearing up the camping section of Decathlon. The brakes both on the drops and on the hoods seemed a bit weedy and if I get one I might replace the brake blocks with something a bit meatier but other than that it seemed great.

I bought my 540 flat bar from Edinburgh Decathlon last year, which included a good chat with one of the bike sales team re converting for one handed use. The guy knew his stuff, and the mechanic who did the one handed set up (Juanma) was excellent. I bought the parts to convert to drop bar and took it in for Juanma to do the work, and was another good job. If you can afford I'd go for the 520.
