I think a lot of (particularly older, wiser?) cyclists would like the option of a 13/32 cassette to give a win/win situation where pedalling over 30mph isn't required. I'll stick with a triple for the time being I think Either that or a 46-30 or 46-32 chainset would be a good solution.

... You did make a wrong assumption though, 11-32 will give you more top speed than 12-28 you currently have. What you are going to loose is a refinement in shifting - you won't be able to fine tune your cadence due to bigger jumps between rear chain rings. Thank you for all that....... better hill climbing and faster top speed..... its all win/win then. 'more top speed' is from the transmission prospective. Providing an engine capable enough of utilizing it still remains with you

I find that having to get off and walk up the steep bits really sabotages my efforts at maintaining any sort of efficient cadence.

Trouble is 'compact's take a 34 minimum then you're going to the expense of buying a mtb chainset. And while I'm moaning what a brilliant idea to bring out a 1x 10/40 cassette that costs £££s needs a special freehub, has huge gaps and the small sprockets will wear out in no time if you use them...

Apologies for the delay in getting back on this one. Fell off my other bike and have been out of action for a few weeks, whoops!!
Fitted the Tiagra 11-32 with no problems at all on the standard Triban 540. Just the usual minor gear tinkering/checking required that you'd expect taking everything off and back on.
Derailleur took the whole change in its stride, even on the extreme combinations.
Rode the bike yesterday and the big cog does give some welcome relief up the hills of Yorkshire compared to the standard 12-28 fitted.
Happy days!

Hi zarch, I'm also a 2015/16 540 owner, love the bike!
Looking to switch to a 11-32t cassette to help with hills.
Did you change the chain or only adjust the rear mech limit screws to fit your cassette?
Cheers, Martin

No, didn't need to replace the chain or have to mess with limit screws. Was just a simple straight replacement.

Interesting read. I've just ordered a 4600 gs RD to replace my 4600 ss RD as am setting up my flat bar 540 for mixed terrain / adventure cross where I know there is some steep stuff, I was going to fit 11-32 cassette. But if people are getting 32t to work ok on ss derailleurs.... by the same token would 34t work fine on a gs 4600 RD (2t over the shimano spec limit)? Anyone tried this?
PS. I'm going to buy a new chain anyway, so I was going to go with 1 link longer for the 32t, I'd guess 2 links longer for 34t?
