Due to back problems I've decided to move from using a backpack to carry stuff to and from work to installing pannier racks and bags, can anyone recommendation of what to purchase as I've seen various types at varying prices and don't really know what I'm looking for. I've got the 500se not sure if that makes a difference to type buying.
Many thanks

Can anyone please recommend a rear pannier rack for a Triban 540?
This mid 50's back can no longer bear the weight of his heavy work laptop, in a rucksack home up a 4 mile climb back home in the evening...
There is also the addded complication of a mudguard to fix it over, but at least there are plenty of lugs brazed on and is a rim brake bike.
Any thoughts?

This is what I use on the older Triban 3 type frame. It should fit your 540 no problems. Nice rack There is also the Tortec Ultralite although it is double the price.

www.decathlon.co.uk/p/900-ultra-light-pannier-rack/_/R-p-171102 this gets round the problem of an arm fouling the rear brake/cable by only having one arm. Very narrow on top so no use for a top bag but keeps panniers close in . Thanks for this info Chas, looks like it has plenty of height to get well over my mudguard, but what about the single arm, won't that cause a weight in a bag to wobble around? Have you used one?

Rocket, thanks for you reply, unfortunately your link is coming up with a blank page!
Do you have the make and model?

I've not used one myself as I like to use a racktop bag but I've fitted a few to bikes and they're very solid. Any side to side movement would be down to the vertical legs flexing and the narrow top makes this probably more rigid than a traditional design. The single arm doesn't support any weight and only prevents it moving fore and aft. The weakest point of any rack you fit is probably the M5 bolts holding it to the frame near the axle. I've used a Tortec Ultralight and it's great with a rack top bag but for a side pannier bag the tour version Rocket has linked to would be better with the dog leg rear arm (the decathlon one also has this)

Thanks again for the info Chas
I've ordered a Tourtec Ultralight from merlin, at Β£21 it seemed the right rack at a good price.
I'm sure my boss has above rack on his Genesis, it fits over his muguards OK and he can carry his Ortleib's without any problems.
So I'll see if I can follow suit.
I'll let you know how I get on

On the topic of pannier racks, with the Triban RC520 the fork has a single eyelet on each blade. What sort of racks can use it? I am thinking of a bottle cage with a zip tie, but if it was designed that way then I'd assume there are racks built for a single eyelet each side?
