Spot on ChrisD One of the things I like about recording my rides with IpBike is that it tells you how much time you spent pedalling whilst moving. I'm usually 99%+ even on yesterdays monster. Them pedals are meant for turning...

Club Ride: Wednesday 80% (damn club rides mean I have to wait around a lot though) Velodrome: Tuesday 97% Turbo: Thursday 99.7%!

If you want to recreate road conditions, set your trainer up in a refrigeration plant, hire a great big massive fan, turn it up full blast and then get the misses to direct a garden hose towards you. Endure all this for about 3 hours and you'll be half way to creating something akin. Can't really help on the hills front, traffic or icy/bumpy roads etc. How do you recreate near misses and punishment passes etc? I suppose you could always get one of the kids to put on a massive cardboard box and run past you shouting 'Get off the ****ing road! Pay Road Tax!'

Cheers guys! That's some highly entertaining and useful advice, and I suppose I'll just have to suck it up and go outside. The thing is I knackered my old wheels riding in crappy weather last winter, bought some Mavic Aksiums, and I'm now terrified of something happening to them like specks of mud causing a puncture or strong winds eroding the spokes :-P

Decent pads (Koolstops), avoid wet weather, get big sponge and wash off with soapy water / spray off with hose every outing, wet wipes when dry, bit of GT85 on spokes n hubs - avoid hills when it's gritty damp, as coming down and grinding the rims is the worst wearing.

It was water that got into the hubs last time, and the bottom bracket, just from rain, so I'm pretty paranoid about that now

Need to grease regularly - think of a bike like walking boots or maybe canvas fishing waders, if they get wet n muddy they're going to need some looking after; chuck it in the shed damp n dirty and the elements will take their toll.
