Never used Strava to record a ride, i always Cyclemeter and then import the ride to Strava, this was pretty much the first app i used so all my data is in here. I like the amount of stats you can setup to view as you're riding, as far as im aware you don't get anywhere near this much info from Strava (i use this as my bike comp via a Rflkt). Cyclemeter integrates with Strava so there's no messing about exporting the ride data, it just posts to it after your ride. Runkeeper may also so the same Type of thing.

Did a direct strava ride today and worked a treat

I have a gar,in 200 now so record ride on there then import to strava. however always used to use my phone (Samsung Galaxy 2) and had it crash about twice in a year. Certainly not regular thing.
