Cheers guys some really great advice and helpful info to chew over, Rad the Banana taped to your frame priceless Bananas are not too bad for type 2 diabetes as long as its a small one, Salt very bad just in general not really diabetes specific what about a salted rice cracker like Snak a jacks the cheese ones are quite salty rather than Salted Crisps which are loaded with saturated fat, shall i move my cleats forward again, not had a chance to ride today bloody standing water everywhere and wet roads combined with blind car drivers not a good mix, went for a power walk instead and got chased by a bloomin great dane so the walk turned into a run even when i cant cycle still have excercise 4 times a week thank you Diabetes.

Salt is 'bad' is it? How have you concluded that? Is this the ignorance is bliss thread? Time to get a bit preachy, ignorance is not bliss when it comes to nutrition and hydration for cycling - we're no longer on the same wavelength as the general sofa cherishing populous now we're cyclists and some of what we might perceive as conventional wisdom doesn't always apply in the same way to endurance exercise, it's a different deal with those who are fairly inactive - when you develop into a cyclist (one who's going to be doing more than a short pootle), you have a different set of concerns, you may not feel like it yet but you're actually turning into 'an athlete'. You're not alone thinking like this though, I keep having the salt discussion with my in-laws, they're retired and obsessed with their health, diet and cholesterol levels etc - the last discussion was when in the Gower a few weeks back ... I go out and cycle for a few hours, whilst they're at the beach with the kids but despite knowing I've been all over the peninsula in a day, they think I'm odd for wanting larger meal portions and salt on my food in the evening; I tell them that I've just used 2000 calories in addition to my daily needs and sweated the whole time that I've been riding, therefore a bit of salt and extra potatoes / bread is not a bad thing for me, in fact it's actually needed to replenish deficits (and avoid things like cramps the next outing )! Have a read here ... www.roadcycling.co.nz/Coach/dr-armstrong-salt-and-the-athlete.htmlSeriously though, I'm no expert in relation to your scenario, so best have a word with your doc' about it - hopefully they'll be clued up on the issues in order to be able to advise you scientifically, not just regurgitate things they've been told; if you're really serious about it all, then perhaps consult a sport nutritionist that knows about diabetes.

So whilst Dr Armstrong (of Glasgow / NZ) above says it's not wholly salt deficit that causes cramps, he does say that it's a product of longer term imbalances - Mr L E Gunderson 's lot below pretty much say what the members here have said, strikes me you may have a longer term imbalance in your levels developed over time: www.livestrong.com/article/386291-cramps-in-the-calf-muscle-while-bicycling/

If you work on the design a little more on this Rad you could be onto something as there is obviously a market for a banana mount...www.coolthings.com/banana-holder/

What like the banana slicer they're trying to budge in Aldi, even at a reduced cost they're struggling ... whilst giggling at that one we spotted something even more daft, the strawberry slicer - we had a good laugh with the kids about those the other day!

Salt is like many other nutrients, bad for you if taken in excess, however too little salt can also cause issue (such as cramping muscles). Lack of salt might be part of you calf issues, it might not be, just throwing the idea out there for you to consider.
And yeah snack a jacks are probably an even better option over crisps, or even better still, a small amount of salted peanuts or cashews.
I was just haing walkers ready salted as an example as it happened to be in the vending machine at my pool! Haha.
