Bit miffed with the Halfords reservation thing, as supposed to be quick but actually limited my options.

Just be careful about other cyclists dumping there bikes on top of yours as well. Did the Wiggle IoW ride last Dec, where the meet point was on the mainland at Lymington. Was quite funny to see the differing reactions of people when they realised their bikes would just be leaned against the side wall, stacked 5-6 deep. As there were 5 of us, we just lined all ours up with my mate's brand new carbon last on. I guess the whole spirit of the day meant security wasn't considered an issue, and my T3 wasn't going to be the first to be taken anyway. Would like to think on a ferry you'd be safe anyway, Rad.

You'd hope but a brand spanking new set of Fulcrum 5's with Michelin Pro 4's are desirable to everyone as a core set or a training set and can be popped off in seconds, then hidden in a car boot, so best not tempt someone's dark side.

I'm considering the milkman cable thing just for cafe stops. It can got round several bikes together, it will stop someone just running off with a bike.
They are usually in site or under the window where we are seated. If mine is locked and someone elses isn't then...
I have an heavy duty lock to the girder in the garage for storage, I don't want to be lugging a big chain around with me all ride though.
Tis a quandary!

A friend has a lock similar to the milkman one which incorporates a motion activated alarm, maybe the best bet for cafe stops? I join in with several different groups and it's interesting how CTC touring groups carry locks while 'race' types leave often more expensive bikes unlocked. I rely on the fact that mine is usually the least valuable bike there

I rely on the fact that mine is usually the least valuable bike there Is it that CTC touring types are typically self sufficient and a lock is just a bit more gear? Carrying a lock is not very "racy" is it? What do the "rules" say about locks? I don't suppose pro riders have to leave their bikes, they can probably just hand it to a member of the team?

You not doing a turbo trainer on the ferry to say you cycled to France ! Now that I'd do! Would be interesting to see the strava as on a turbo trainer so stationary but moving by boat! Hmmm

Number one daughter has been dashing around Cardiff on her Giant hybrid for the last three years and (so far) this has kept local skroats at bay:-
Onguard Pitbull Shackle Lock 115mm x 230mm Including Cable
Combined with a set of locking skewers this has kept the bike largely intact. I think it comes in around Β£20-25 now. Had a bit of trouble with the lock sticking (grit? - teflon spray usually sorts it) but it is outside in all weathers.

Although I do have a couple of bike locks they have only been used a couple of times. I tend these days not to leave my bike anywhere unattended, stored indoors. When i'm on holiday it's the same story, stored in the luggage room.
Many years ago I had a bike stolen while left outside of a drinking establishment it was a real downer! Utube shows how easy most of the locks are to disable though i'm sure they are a deterrent to all but the desperate or professionals.
Thanks for starting this thread it's given me food for thought...I always wear my helmet, carry water, tubes, tools, etc.,...so maybe the weight of a lock won't do any harm.
