More recently I go out with a route in mind but with options for easy bail outs or more challenging departures, if feeling up to it - Sunday I left myself a mid ride T junction decision to be made after a big hill I hadn't done before (near Devauden across the Severn Bridge) ... turns out I was up for the more challenging option after it and had to follow my nose a bit via place names to work my way across the Wye to St Briavels, rather than using the Garmin.

I reckon you should all go out with the intention of getting lost, pick a nice day, take spares, money, credit card, well charged phone etc. - how bad can it be !? When I was young and daft and riding a motorbike I used to navigate on the following principle.... The M1 ran north/south and the A52 ran east/west. I knew which quadrant I was in, so it was merely ( ) a case of travelling in the right direction until I hit one of them to get the road home.

I used to do this when I lived in Bogota - would just go off walking. found some "interesting" neighbourhoods, and got into a few scrapes, but great adventure. I have a real yen to explore the roads on the York moors. May take try this approach. sunny day, not a care in the world... might even make me feel young and carefree again. very excited about this. gonna head over holme moss and see where i get to... whats the worst that could happen? - might end up in Barnsley i suppose! =P

ianmoss will be on your case for that . I have to work hard to get lost around here, it's actually quite difficult, with a good sense of direction and major landmarks all over the place. Following my mate, who has trained epic long rides for years, is quite an experience at times, he doesn't give me much info, certainly develops your 'deal with it' ability; especially on hills you can't see the way over - you just plug on and they end up behind you eventually.

I managed 17 miles averaging just over 16 mph this morning. Didn't pass one strava user though according to the flyby jobber.
For me it's getting out around work and family time. The Mrs runs her small business, I have my own job. Got a nine year old and a three month old boy. It's just seizing the moment and going when I get chance.
Onwards and upwards.... Why didn't I do all this year's ago!
Mark.

2/3 3/4 times a week depending if im working or not, anything from 10 mile on the hybrid (Merida... visiting) to 20/30 or 50/60 on the T3a or Vitus depending on if its week day or week end, like to go as fast as i can but speed dont matter as i know i'll never be as fast as most others, more time in the saddle improves us all, enjoy it while you can, take in the views and enjoy.

Try to commute in/out work at least twice a week which is either 20 or 25 mile round trip (always 12.5 miles home and either 8 or 12.5 miles in depending on route and how much of a hurry I'm in!).
Then try to get a longer one in every week (at least that's the aim, with family/work etc probably manage it about two thirds of the time) which is normally in the range of 35-60 miles either on flats around severn basin if in a hurry (as fast) or preferably over the severn bridge and into Wales around St. Brivel, tinturn, usk, monmouth.
Then try to do 2-3 sportives a year around the 100 mile mark.
Also started doing some local 10mile TTs on an evening this year. Only managed one so far but hopefully do another 3 or 4 over the summer.

I tend to ride 10 miles a day when I ride to work ( about three days a week ) and a ride for fun tends to be about 20-25 miles. I'm going to do a 50 miler soon. Some may scoff, but I think that's a good ride. One of my friends regularly does 100 milers. But he's half human half machine.

Bought a hybrid at the end of May and did my first ride - 35 - 40 miles. Then I bought the Triban
I just use map my ride rather than Strava and since that first one it's been: 21.31 miles - 12.6mph 12.68 miles - 13.9mph 15.32 miles - 14.3mph 22.99 miles - 12.1mph 60.56 miles - 13.4mph 20.74 miles - 14.1mph 14.28 miles - 14.1mph
Try and get out 2 / 3 times a week. But what really annoys me is that I keep telling my mate, I go riding with, that we need to at least once a week, do the same route so we can see how we're progressing. but as you can see from the mileage, it doesn't happen.

Exactly right @meko. If you can't measure it you can't manage it. My East Lancs and Marsden rides are a bit of an in joke on here but they serve exactly that purpose. Blow your mate off and go it solo as he's holding back your potential and isn't serious. Practice, protein....

I get out maybe once a week but if I'm on call that stops me , I'm very lucky as if I say I'm out on a Sunday morning that generally means when I get back I get back. However like everyone we all have to work around each other's commitments.
Try to get in about 35-40 miles on a Sunday but would like to get out more in the week. My boys do jujitsu for an hour on Tuesdays so aiming to get out whilst they are there , also younger one has scouts for 2 1/2 hrs on Fridays and my riding mates done goes too , going to try and get him to come out then too should be able to get 35 in in that time span.
But at the moment Jessica is licking her wounds from yesterday's off so we will be visiting decathlon for a check up. And no riding until we are fixed up

I'll just start refusing some of the rides till he settles on a route, but he'll say he's trying to find one. Although today he's trying to kill me. 25 mile ride planned for tonight up lots of hills, pretty sure it's just because he's taken delivery of his carbon bike and wants to see if the loss of a few kg will help him go up hill

Would the "Ritmo(?)" system be able to give you a ranking on these rides? Wasn't the theory that, when you did a qualifying ride (10+ miles?), your ranking was adjusted to allow for distance, hills, speed etc....
