...well, perhaps ... but then there's the question of relatively late season buying, getting through winter, early new year sales of frames and whole bikes that price drop running up to spring etc ... oh ... and wanting a track bike to race with in the autumn / winter !

I think it being the bike of the TDF winner is a perfectly reasonable basis for having that opinion, especially for those of us who are living in T3 world, plus talking in jest as nomoreheroes clearly was. Your own opinion comes back to my original question, at what point does the Triban and it's upgrade potential become inadequate, needing to be replaced by what we might consider a better bike? It might not have even been a pinarello! A lot of the pro peloton often have their bikes custom made by the likes of Sarto and then rebadged given that the off the peg bikes aren't alway the best fit and the teams have money to burn. Having said that, like @davefy7 and Radchenister have said, anything above 105 and I'd look at a new bike. I've upgraded to that and some decent wheels and tbh above that you're into diminishing returns territory anyway without upgrading to a better frameset. But again, as rad says, you should be fit enough to appreciate the upgrade otherwise it's not really a value orientated upgrade!
