Mrs RL has given the green light for new pedals and shoes. She thinks they are a necessity for riding the bike. (Not arguing with her!) She also suggests that trackie bottoms billowing in the wind are not the done thing on a road bike, especially as spring is due upon us. (again, no hint of an argument) Over to the experienced members! What would you recommend as good choices for pedals and shoes? Bear in mind I'm a tight ar$ed Yorkie, I don't want to spend oodles on shoes! Would it be safe to say the Shimano M520's are a good pedal choice? Obviously I'm considering the MTB shoe route as I would need to be able to walk about easily in the shoes as well. Would be nice to get MTB type shoes that have a resemblance to road shoes (if you get me!)

Not sure about experienced but I am with MTBs ! If I was on a thoroughbred good weather road bike (maybe next year) - not the all encompassing multi-weather / winter trainer / fast commuter / leisure riding / Ford Focus of bikes that the T3 is, I would go road pedal route ... but I'm (/ we're) not, so the MTB option makes sense to me. Refine the bike with all the trimmings and perhaps you've make the bridge to calling it a full on road bike but I see it as an all rounder at present? Think m520's are a safe bet and fit the bike spec', i.e. the 'all purpose' deal but there is a more expensive better version that you might consider www.evanscycles.com/products/shimano/m540-spd-mtb-pedals-ec009751 - if these were just a bit cheaper I would have gone for them instead (sayΒ£25) but they're still OK at circa Β£30 ; I have lighter and higher spec still on my MTB but don't think the standard bike warrants worrying too much about this or else may as well switch to the road shoes / pedals idea. The Sports Direct shoes are fine and fit the previous idea of a just get moving and worry later about finessing your set up type thang - here in sunny S Glos, mine get sprayed with muddy gunk every outing, so they're fine for that and I'd be cursing if I had plush white ones (without covers) but Shimano, Diadora, North Wave etc. would be my starting point for looking at fair weather shoes. Oh, did I mention just getting out there !?

As regards MTB shoes Redleader have a look at these, www.sportsdirect.com/muddyfox-mbs100-mens-cycling-shoes-149024I bought a pair and they are very comfortable. Don't be put off buy the picture, they are not as chunky as they look. I also bought some Muddy Fox road shoes for my T3 and I there is not much difference in the look. Also for 18 quid you can't go wrong. If you don't like them I am sure you could move them on without much of a loss.

I absolutely agree. I highly rate the Ford Focus myself. Your reference kind of implied it is jack of all trades and not particularly aspirational which I suppose is true to some extent. I was just a bit worried however that the T3 was losing is LEGENDARY status in your eyes. Is criticism of the T3 allowed on this site? Heresy surely?

I think understanding its power is the key here ? Call it the 'people's bike' if you prefer (although I never really rated VW Beatles), we could call it the VW Golf of road bikes, if you're that way inclined ... but it's certainly not a Lamborghini Gallardo. Ask our member Carbon and he'll explain further no doubt .

Returning to cycle talk!!! How do you clipless members get on with the pedals? I've noticed with the stock T3 pedals and clips that they do tend to catch on the front tyre if the bars are moved anything from around 20 degrees of straight ahead! With clipless pedals is this no longer an issue?

I'm all for getting rid of the toe clip scene as I didn't get on with them in the 1950's & 1960's So clipless is the way to go as to muddyfox stuff well if it's all your buget will stretch to then you must go that route, but I tried some of their shoes on and all they had there were far to small! So I had to spend a bit more and go the wiggle route as they have a no problem return system and I went as I have said in another post that I chose the SPD MTB shoe as it enables easier walking Ok I got the style of shoe that had laces on it www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-mt33-spd-leisure-shoes/ instead of velcro fixing as thinking that perhaps the velcro would wear out? before the shoe inself. So perhaps they don't look that sporty though I know they won't come off and laces can always be replaced but as I say its always down to what you feel most comfortable in Regards Antnee

Hi Red, don't think I could ride without them tbh. Your feet are set further back on the clipless, so fouling the wheel is not a problem. Also able to put more power through the pedals than with "normal ones" without fear of slipping off. Also you're able to pull up on the pedals as well. Once you get used to riding with them there's no going back IMO.

M520s with The muddy Foxes for real value option.
If there really just for on the bike and your not going to do a lot of clopping about on them, they get some shimano SPD 5700 Sls (about Β£30 on line) and some DHB shoes from Wiggle.
The pedals are as good as any out there and the DHB shoes are excellent and more roadie looking.
Practice on grass. The DHB shorts and Bib Tights are also top value. Although Aldis (Crane Gear) Lidl and SPEG on line are all excellent too.

After giving it a bit of thought I've decided to go for the M520 pedals!
Looked them up on the net and now faced with a new dilemma.
WHAT COLOUR?
Honestly, not sure which to go for. Black, white or ali coloured. Quite liking the look of the white and black. Which go best with the T3?

Get black, the white ones will scratch up and look tatty very quickly. and blacks neutral for transferring from bike to bike. I ve had M520s for commuting for about 5 years and 10 different bikes.

Still haven't got any yet! Spotted these and thought they would do the business, especially for short rides where I may be wearing......... dare I say .........trainers! Clip in one side, platform the other. What do the pedal panel think?
