For me and the OH, we just pootle about, getting fitter and fitter. We're nowhere near group riding level, we love each other's company and encourage each other up some of the more taxing hills. From time to time I form a breakaway and sprint ahead to steal the stage Cav style, only to wait for OH at top of climb as I catch my breath and thighs recover... Lovely. Why am I reminded of the scene from last of the summer wine , two bike by the road and the two that keep sneaking off for a bit in the fields that keep getting busted.

Lols, I have to confess I made a similar observation when we answered a call of nature at the same time yesterday!

I for one don't like riding alone and always looking for company. I have also seen issues brought up about cyclist not able to ride in groups/peloton. CW had an article on the 48 rules of cycling that made for interesting reading. The lack of social club runs is affecting how we actually ride in a peloton. Debates on this is on going with many in agreement that this may be the reason for so many crashes in today's racing pelotons.
We need to ride more together is my opinion.

Over a year later and my Triban 3 is serving me well, just had a new chain and drive chain fitted at local bike shop.Decathlon had a replacement drive chain for me at the stockport branch. I feel I have improved cycling although finding time is always a problem, the usual family commitments etc. 20milers usually and the odd 40-50 miler. It still bothers me sometimes when I glance behind me an see no one in sight then 5mins later out of the blue im being over taken usually up a hill and left for dust by someone. Good example yesterday,1st ride in 9 days as iv been on holiday so can only see that as an excuse lol. I did feel knackered and was climbing a short hill at about 8-9mph. The guy passing me was gong for it and I do think, could he go the same speed on my bike......probably. I think the moral is I must ride more after all. Don't get me wrong I love cycling ,im 44 and maybe cant expect to ride like a 24 yr old or is that just another excuse. LOl.

Thanks for taking the time to come back and post again @gilesashley.
It's great to hear you're still out there getting the miles in. I've found using a tracker site like Strava (or Endomondo or any of the others) and now posting my rides up here on the forum is great encouragement to get out there. I was really pleased to have passed my total mileage for last year by the end of July this year so it's working. Keep up the miles and the rest of the stuff will flow. There will always be faster types but monitoring your own improvements is really motivating.

thanks chris for the advice. I think a tracker site is the way to go.

You are not expected to compete, just ride the bike. I'm 55 now, and like you i was a late starter. I'm content with what i do, I'm not likely to get any KOMs on Strava, but I'm delighted to be in the top 10% for a lot of the segments. I'm getting a little fitter all the time, but I have to face the fact that if the goal I'm chasing was a plane, it's not only left the airport but is serving the in-flight meals. I take pleasure in the little victories. For instance; if ever you're overtaken by someone who is whistling, it's likely to be me. I'm only kidding myself though, as soon as I'm out of earshot I'm gasping for breathe and trying not to be sick.
