twice a week riding, 25-30 midweek training, 50'ish weekend (sportives or Derbyshire hills which is why the granny gear is very much needed)

When i started out i had a triple on my T5 and trust me i need the granny ring on climbs. Once this wore i upgraded to 105 and a 52/36 with a 32 on the back, this is ideal on my everyday bike. on the Summer bike i've got a 53/39 with a 28 on the back but do have the option to swap to a 50/34 if i know there's a lot of climbing.
Not long been back from Italy as we were using 50/34 with 30's on the back, on the big climbs over there this was needed and to be honest a 32 wouldn't have gone a miss. I was with a couple of strong riders who agreed there would be nothing wrong using a triple so you can spin on the climbs. On the downside you just spin out on the descents with a 50 on the front.
I guess it's down to personal preference really and how strong a rider you, there's no point in grinding it out and battering your legs just to prove a point when you can spin it out.
