. The Orbea bike I highlighted allegedly has the same frame as used by some pro teams last year Not quite, it has the same shape, but the lower grade carbon (another of those con's of Rocket 's post) - and that's where most of the good comes really.

That's not how I read it. This bike was originally priced at two grand so I don't think the frame would be sub standard. "Designed around the Orbea's top end race frame, the Orca MS35E is all about elite cycling performance and thanks to the OMP monocoque frame and fork construction, an extremely lightweight bike is produced. The Frame is 20% stiffer than previous editions of the Orca meaning power can be transferred efficiently and effectively."

Note the word "around", not "on". review of different spec bike - but relevent section: www.bikeradar.com/road/gear/category/bikes/road/product/orbea-orca-m20-review-50704/ "...which gets Orbea’s slightly lower-grade OMP carbon rather than the top-spec OMR stuff". Rocket has this on the head... all marketing again, careful wording can do wonders.

So anyway back to the original thread title.
The Ultra 700 AF at £550 is an absolute bargain and anybody requiring a road bike that does not need to fit a rack or proper mudguards should snap one up quick.

OK I did wonder about the precise meaning of the word "around" in this context myself but I just read the review which was very positive. They had the bike listed at £2,399 whereas Cycle Surgery are knocking it out at £1,099. I think its a bargain but not a massive improvement on my Cinelli which has a slightly heavier frame but at least it's RED so I will be giving the Orca a miss. The Ultra 700 AF is also amazing value at £550 but, since my trusty T3 has probably cost around £800 with upgrades I won't be buying that either. The Triban is ideal for winter riding. I just fitted some lightweight (under 200 gms) Vittoria Diamante Pro tyres (on offer with Merlin)so it should spin up hills a bit better. Much lighter than the Zaffiros but they may tempt the deflation fairy.

I've realised I can buy vouchers through my workplace to pay for this bring it down to £517 -- chas can you confirm that I can use multiple e-vouchers per transaction for this purchase? Thanks!

Sorry, I don't know much about that side of things, I can ask when I'm in again on Sun, or you can phone a store and ask customer services, I don't see why not though.

I don't get to go to a Decathlon very often (although our nearest one is now a mere 135 miles away instead of 150)! On Monday we were at a trade show at the NEC and finished a little earlier than expected. Imagine my surprise when the OH asks if there's a Decathlon nearby. So off we went to Wednesbury where 2½ hours later I came out with one of these. Well at £550 it would be rude not to. Fantastic bike/spec for the money. My only complaint is the colour, it's not red, but the grey/lime green combination is growing on me. I got the S and my Triban 3 is a 54. The S is slightly smaller than the 54 with a slightly shorter reach. When I get used to it I thibk it will be more comfortable. Only had time for a quick 10.5 mile test ride so far. I have weighed it (standing on bathroom scales holding the bike and subtracting my weight. This gives the weight as 8.6 Kg (Inc R540 pedals). Decathlon claim 8.9Kg for size medium so I'm happy with that. As a comparison the T3 Red weighs 9.5Kg (WH501 wheels, Tiagra compact groupset and R540 Pedals). We now have 4 BTwins in the family, Ultra 700AF, Triban 3 Red and 2 Rockrider 500's, plus three others which we won't mention!

I'd recommend one thoroughly. Had mine for about 3 months now and love it. The rear brake hasn't caused me any problems cycling through the winter months, though the only quibble I have is its lack of ability to fit a decent set of mudguards as it's my commuter bike.

Bloody hell, finally I've bought this!
I have a question: the rear brake cable is sticking out a bit near the pedals. Is this normal?
