I've not bought twice and I certainly bought cheap - no park love from me, no point. Maybe not yet. Prime example for me was the Aldi Tool kit, great bit of a kit for the price when i got it but within 12 - 18 months i replaced all the tools (well the ones i actually used) with better quality ones as they'ed broke / worn etc. OK, so for the park tools to become worthwhile, assuming I mange to break now my completely undamaged tool on next use (which seems unlikely given reliability to date). I will be able to buy the ones I bought 6 more times and them still be cheaper than the park ones from wiggle - the ones I have have lasted 30 months so far, so (still assuming a tool that looks today how it looked when bought breaks on next use) that requires 17.5years before the park tool pays for itself. You maybe right, it might be buy cheap, buy twice. But that doesn't really tell the story of the time between the multiple purchases... and why do we think the park tools ones are going to last 17.5 years? Hell by then I suspect I won't be using them for gears anymore anyhow so will have halved their use.

As for the Aldi tool Kit, which I still have. Some bits were dreadful (the chain breaker in particular), others just fine. I've replaced the : - chain breaker - cassette tool (which was getting a bit chewed) - tyre levers (I used those twice before snapping one) But everything else has now managed 3 strip down and rebuilds - was one of the best £14.99s I've ever spent.

r0b1et - not forcing anyone to buy more expensive tools, kit, accessories this is just my preference based on my experience (and not just with cycling). If people want to by cheap then go for it, i'm not here to stop them.

I take against the very silly and poorly executed use of "buy cheap, buy twice"... almost universally it is used without thought. eg in this case, buy cheap, buy 7 times and it still works out cheaper.
I'm sure it works ok if the cheap simply never works - but in this case, it does, well.

Stop fibbing goffski. You don't do any bike maintenance judging from the state I've seen your bike in

I'm sure it works ok if the cheap simply never works - but in this case, it does, well. I'm a cheapskate and always look for bargains so I did buy the screwfix ones and when the cutting edge was damaged by cutting a harder material than they're designed for I bought the correct tool for the job. From Q&A on the Screwfix site Cutting ability Would these cutters be suitable for cutting 4mm wire rope, part # 57524 ? If not, what would you recommend? 23 Jul 2016by Anonymous,Chelmsford , DIY Hello Anonymous, This product would not be suitable for cutting 4mm wire rope. Thank you for using Q&A. 25 Jul 2016 Genuine Shimano or other decent gear outer is much harder to cut than wire rope. Also I don't see how you get £7.99 x 7 =£18.29 ? As I said in the earlier post, they do work for very occasional use but I think it's worth paying a bit more for the correct tool and for a bit more again the Park tool has a 'lifetime warranty' and built in crimpers

EXACTLY. Not like the ones mentioned since. They were 2.49 (I even found the email - I bought a bunch of screws at the same time for a diy job). 2.49*7 = 17.43. The crimpers no doubt are better than my long nosed pliers. If you want to be usign them all the time, sure buy the park ones... I would if I was a regular mechanic, but used once a month or so I can replace them a lot before the park feel worthwhile. And other make... well mine appear to be the same ones.

Sorry Rob I missed that we're obviously talking about different cutters. Yours are probably just the same as my Jobsworth ones and the X tools all of which I'm sure are fine and they were a real bargain. If still available at that price I'd buy them, but choosing between £12.99 for Decathlon ones (which aren't available) and £18.29 for Park ones I'd probably pay the extra £5

I can't believe what I've started Just to show I'm not taking sides, I sat firmly on the fence and went for the X-tools ones. I really hope I don't regret not having a crimper now...
