Why would anyone buy the 520 now, with only £50 difference to the next bike up? ~ annoyed I bought the 520 only a few months ago You've picked the wrong sport if you're easily annoyed by ever developing tech, gradual trickle down and price drops. If you'be ridden for a few months, then there's your benefit right there. Sometimes you need things now and pay the price, other times you hold out for sales, that's how it is with cycling gear.

It's an amazing price for that bike configuration - even though it is 10 speed 105, just wheels and groupset cost almost that much. Add a nice light frame with facilities to attach fenders and racks and bigger tires - there's nothing not to like. Thing that the original poster might want to keep in mind is that 540 frame geometry is more relaxed that the T3. So if you like you current bike size and if it feels just right racy on the road, chances are, you'd be more upright on 540. Looking at my height vs the measurements I would probably need a XS (which possibly doesn't exist?) but yeah, what a great deal! Unfortunately I am really attached to my Triban 3, I don't want to part with it yet

Not really annoyed, just more curious as to Decathlon's motivation in reducing the 540 but not the 520. When I made my decision, £150 was too much to justify the dearer bike, but I imagine most people could probably stretch to another £50, so surely sales of the 520 will now drop off.

As well as this price reduction I see the 540 flat bar is now out of stock in popular sizes. Is this a sign that something new is coming? Possibly the newer Tiagra groupset and disk brakes.

The reduction is to clear stock for the new model due soon, this happens with most 'end of line' items in the store and provides real bargains. The new model will feature the current 11s 105 and Shimano chainset for £650.

I'm a little torn over this at the moment. Want to get the boy his first road bike - He has a RR540 at the moment. I was thinking of a 2nd hand T3/T5 but everyone wants so much money for them.
My T5 (60) is a little too big for him (he's nearly 6ft but says riding it gives him back ache) and with hindsight a 57 might have been better for me too! (I'm 6ft 1). The question is, do I get him a 57 500 or 500SE or do I spend the extra and get him the 540 for his first road bike?
Realistically (ie getting it past SWMBO) the 540 is over spec for what he needs. But, in the back of my mind, I've wondered whether I let him 'grow into' my T5 (maybe get narrower bars as I think the wider bars on the 60 might be causing him the problem) and get myself a 57 540 as a sportier commuter and winter hack?

Did you consider having him try 80 to 90 mm stem on T5? Upgrade would cost you 560 then

The 8 speed cassette is fitted to my lad's - I can't remember if it comes with a spacer or not but will fit and it's easy to source for a couple of quid if you need one. Shop around and get some decent 650c tyres also, as they'll compliment the quality of wheels. The Tiagra is also a good VFM and worthwhile upgrade IMO, although my own T3 is now back on its original groupset but with 105 brakes and Aksiums, operating as a winter trainer (mainly used on turbo this last few months, it did have a while with a 10 speed Tiagra groupset on it) - it's still functional enough to ride about training with no real hassles, it's not as refined as my other bike but it doesn't hold me back to an extent that I am bothered about changing it until absolutely necessary. If it was my only bike then I would do it as a priority. The T3 frame is rock solid functional bit of kit. Thanks for this. Have put a £79.99 bid in for the wheels. If the cassette doesn't fit do you know what spacer(s) I'd need?

My opinion on things like this is get the best you can afford as in theory its a long(ish) term investment. I can't comment on Tiagra but the 105 i've put on my T5 is very smooth and i'm very happy with it. Regards fitting it just give it a go yourself. I tend to take things apart and never be able to putt hem back together again so they end up in the bin, found fitting the groupset no problem. Paulinblack - Get the best you can afford, otherwise he'll be wanting a new/better bike as soon as he's fully got the bug. Regarding the 60 sounds too big for him, i'm 6ft 1 and ride a 57 and it's perfect.

Just looked, lad's doesn't need a spacer, so that means the freehub is 8/9/10 compatible (so don't buy an 11-speed groupset unless you factor in buying an 11 speed freehub).

Popped into Decathlon today and saw the 540 with hundred quid off at £499. At 600 it was a bargain now it's a steal. Would be awesome with GP4000s ii tyres and preferred saddle and pedals and perhaps a carbon seat post. Now who wants to buy my T3a?
