Don't discount the lbs option. My work scheme is halfords based but I ended up getting my Merida on it

When they say they'll give you 3 years of servicing... given you won't own or buy the bike, what does that mean. Especially given this is the Halfrauds scheme, so has back outs for them at every juncture. I have the same scheme and came to conclusion the gain was about 1% at best, and was really just a get now pay later system, with a (admittedly small, but not 0) chance they decide they'll make more money keeping my bike (given they have nothing to do with my employment etc, they have no reason to treat me well). It's the giant shop who do the servicing, not halfords But do they do servicing for the owner? or the hirer? what if ownership is passed on (which presumably you hope will happen)

I think you're getting over concerned by the Hire Purchace/ownership issue Rob, I know legally Cyclescheme (in our case) owns the bike, but they've told us they have no interest in owning them, it's just a necessary formality for the tax benefits. I'm sure the other providers would be the same. The only issue with us concerns returning the bike, we can't refund the customer as we then lose out on the 10% Cyclescheme take (why some retailers don't offer already discounted bikes on the scheme), they have to return it.

I will be the owner after the year of payments has passed. The do the service biannually and only charge for parts. I went to one of the LBS - had a croix de fer 20 is size 60, but £1200. Plus its just not as good a deal - giant will fit the bike for me, changing stem etc on the croix i'd need to pay for inline levers, new tyres etc.

Maybe I worry too much, but as said, since the government changed the rules of a fair price, the savings for 20% tax payers are minimal and that risk is always there, just because they have no interest in owning a bike doesn't mean they won't: 1 - gain an interest in a year. 2 - realise there's money to be made from them. Add then: 3 - they have no tie to me, my employer does - if my employer owned it I'd worry less as I have a hold there. 4 - You have to agree to do most commuting on it, while its unlikely anyone would check, it 1 or 2 happened - hirer beware. To me, when I bought, it simply wasn't worth the risk. For the ~£15 extra buying it myself cost me, I bought the peace of mind of owning it myself - with no interest in keeping it ill maintained. If interest rates in banks were marginally higher, you'd save a little more by having the money in your account, rather than spent... but well they aren't.

I've found another candidate. This looks much better on paper than the giant. I went to look at the giant yesterday and it didn't blow me away. This however did. www.orrobikes.com/bikes/orro-terra-bike

Surprised that a bike marketed as gravel should only have clearance for up to 35c tyres.
