I have been 'muddling along' for sometime now on Halfords 'bikehut' mtb pedals and muddy fox mtb shoes with cleets and am now in the market for some more road bike ready pedals and shoes.
Any recommendations out there please - not looking for tour quality, carbon fibre etc.
Thanks.

Shimano R540 and RO78 shoes, reasonably priced, functional and available everywhere so you can try the shoes at your LBS before buying a pair on eBay for cheaps.

Agree with duplo - more on shoes and less on pedals. No need to spend more on pedals than £20-25

I've just made this jump into road pedals / shoes!
I went for SpdSl 550 @ £39.95
Shimano R088 shoes for about £62
My advice would be go somewhere and try the shoes, I had my heart set on those BTwin carbon sole shoes but when I tried them they just didn't feel right for me! I'm very pleased with what I got for the money

This is something I have been toying with - for those who have transferred from SPD / MTB shoes, how different is it with Road shoes. Is it a noticeable upgrade?

I don't seem to get hot spots on long rides, and there's a marginal weight saving.
Plus new stuff makes you faster.
