Love my triban 500. Steel fork version. 3 sportives and my fleet of 531 bikes are now just for winter and training. However ... I would like to replace the heavy triple chainset with a compact double version ... Or just a single ring 40 tooth chainset ... The double by choice. Suggestions please for a suitable product.

Leave the bike as is. The fact you believe you can make do with a single chainring says you do not do any significant hill work so losing 200g is of no consequence. You already have a 39 tooth front. I would look to replace the steel forks with a carbon set and save 600g with increased comfort rather than spend what will probably be a similar amount on changing gearing.

I do a considerable amount of hill work on my 531 framed bikes. In the Peak District and South Yorkshire I have no choice ! ..I ride 42 x 16-28 6 speed blocks on my steel bikes. I rode the Arrow and Eroica Sportive's on my 1987 Carlton pro am framed bike. I could always loose another 10 kilos of weight rather than 600gms using carbon for my fork. lol. You must have no body fat to lose. Lucky man. As a 40 year professional in the aerospace and rail industries my regular meetings to discuss delamination of carbon structures leads me to the steel fork ... it really does .. As any mechanical engineer will tell you ... simplicity is a goal ... 2 or even 1 chain ring is good. So back to the actual post .....

I guess a 40 year aerospace technician with such firm views on how to do things is best left to work it out themselves then Roy ?

I think it was me that asked for advice . . As i posted i am new to modern bikes.. All i wanted was a positive response.. Help, guidance from those that have made the move from the 80's to now. Not attitude, just positive help. Another forum, same attitude. Back to the CTC forum i think. "Bye now, and thanks for all the fish".

Sora and Hallowtech, you'll be down to 16 speed, fix the front mech' limit screws so they work for just the two front cogs ( ianmoss has done this) and don't use the third position (I believe this works, haven't done this personally, for my winter bike or my lad's white one); or if you're after 9 or 10 speed, then it's new shifters to get more gears. I'm with Rocket though, don't really see the point, as it doesn't achieve all that much in real riding terms. Stating you're after a single front cog, do hills and can also lose 10 kilos just makes me think you're trolling - this forum is pretty friendly but someone coming on asking for advice whilst also talking weirdly on a range of things, whilst also proclaiming expertise in technical issues and poo pooing materials we've been riding on for several thousand miles with out issue, is unlikely to be taken seriously. You're welcome to stay or welcome to vanish, it strikes me you're the one who's swanned in as a newbie with an attitude ... but perhaps you're a misunderstood soul? PS, I have the ejector button, you don't, if you do answer, then don't say I didn't warn you !
