In January I bought a 500 SE from Decathlon to use a as a commuter. It's the first bike I've purchased from Decathlon and it was pretty much what I expected (reasonably price, and functional).
Sadly after barely 1,000 miles - my Commuter is no-more as I was doored on my way to work on Monday (after a visit to A&E I'm ok). I'm not back on the bike yet but I will be at some point. I know that commuting day-in, day-out gives bikes a massive pounding. So I don't want to have to commute on any of my racing/competition bikes for too long so I'm goign to need a new bike. I'm looking at another B'Twin model (possibly the 520).
After a few months of riding the 500 SE every-day I got to know the bike well, and while the frame (57 cm) suited me - the stem was probably a little too long. I was considering replacing them stem myself and possibly even swapping the bars for the next size down. So if I go to my local Deacathlon and buy a new B'Twin, will they swap the bar and stem at the time of sale free-of-charge/inclusive? I.e. if a want a 57cm frame but with a 90 mm stem and 40 or 42 cm bars?
Addendum: I'm fairly certain the car driver's insurance will be paying out (eventually) but undoubtedly lawyers/solicitors will delay things for months.

Bit of a big ask, the stem is easy enough, although they'll end up with a spare stem that's not packaged up, you'd usually do this yourself and have to buy the part. Swapping bars means discarding or trying to shift a set of used bars, again, you should be buying new ones yourself (like I just did) - the old ones will likely have bar tape glue on them, which can be cleaned off, this takes a fair bit of time; the old bar tape will likely be unusable and a new wrap required, again, this takes a bit of time to fit - we're talking at least 45 to 60 minutes of tinkering and three new parts plus clean up time, so asking for it FOC is a step too far IMO.

I think that Decca would argue that the way that they are able to keep their prices low is because they offer off the shelf rather than an in-store custom fit.

They won't supply but they'll fit FOC.

I would have thought it's at the individual store's discretion, as it's not just swapping a stem over (which I would suspect might be done for free, as so quick and easy) - moon and stick spring to mind sometimes . The only time I've ever used a Deca workshop is near St Malo after snapping a cable en route to the ferry, paid for the cable parts, the fitting work was offered for free as it was a quick job (I would have done it myself but the guy said let me do it it's not a problem) - I wandered off while the work was done to buy a rain cape (it was torrential out) and an adjustment tool just in case for later, in my mind the additional purchases made up for the courtesy shown.

I asked the guy in Surrey quays about new stems last time I was in and he said they'd fit for free if I gave them the part. Handlebars would probably be a bridge too far admittedly

At Giltbrook we'll fit or flip a stem for free, new stems are Β£10 in 60,80, 90 or 100mm. I'd recommend having a sit on a 520 and probably going a size smaller (the geometry is different) I'm guessing you'll find that about right as is.

Warrington Decca put me on a 54 and a 57 on a turbo, set the seat (on the 57) while on the turbo, and then put the 100 stem on instead of the 110, then flipped it - ALL F.o.C!!!
and whenever I take it in for a service I seem to get a set of their lights!

Thanks for the advice.
Perhaps on reflection asking for a change of bars on a pre-built bike is asking a bit too much.

Try a M 520, it comes with 42cm bars and the reach will be similar to your 57cm with shorter stem. The main thing to be aware of is it'll have 170mm cranks not the 175's of the larger sizes.

That's interesting to know - I think the 500 SE is the only bike I own with 175 mm cranks - I think all my other (used for racing) bikes are 172.5 mm or 170 mm (for cross).
