I'm now on to my 3rd rear wheel on my T5. The first one had problems with snapping spokes. The hub on the second one has just gone gritty & screetchy. Both have been replaced with no quibble free of charge by Decca under warranty.
While I was getting the wheel changed today I had a look at the Aero 2024 wheels on the more expensive BTwin bikes. I'd seen mention of them on one thread on here and also on FB. They appear lighter than the standard wheels, appear to roll better (spin test), look better made, can be upgraded to 11 speed and can allegedly cope with a heavy rider like myself. I quite like them as they are understated and I am pretty impressed with Decca, so 'know' that if I have any problem within 2 years they will be replaced. They also have cartridge bearing, which may need less maintenance (I assume). However, they are £115, which I could afford (and its my birthday soon), but seems a lot for an 'own brand' wheel.
More value for money seems to be the Shimano R501, which seems to be available for around £65-75. I've seen a number of people on here buy them. I think they have more spokes than the Aero, so 'should' be stronger I assume. They have cup and cone bearings, which I assume needs more maintenance and I would have to buy from an internet seller - So wouldn't have the same reassurance as buying from Decca. I have read a few reviews saying that this is a 'minor upgrade' to wheels that can be used on the'winter bikes' or commuting in all sorts. So it would be better than what I have, but would it be better than the Aero 2024 and is it worth it if I can just keep replacing the stock wheels?
Then there is the Mavik Aksium. I've read reviews of these things being 'bomb proof'. Maybe that's what I need? But then again, I've read other things saying that they are 'no better than' the R501 and are much more expensive. I could buy at Decca, but they are £140. I think that's more than I want to pay, unless they are likely to last twice as long as the other wheels?
Or, I could stick with what I've got. I have a perfectly good 14 month old stock front and 1 day old stock rear wheel. I could keep trundling away on them until the warranty runs out, which, on current form, would require a couple more 100 mile round trips in the next year to Decca to get replacements. But do I really need to change them?
I plan to carry on commuting in all weathers and all seasons for the foreable future. I can't see me changing the T5 any time soon and SWMBO won't let me go down the n+1 route (yet). So, oh mighty BROC. What should I do?
P.S. I've never created a poll before! Its so exciting!!
