It won't be "loose" - and by pedalling (forwards - my daughter still seems to pedal backwards a lot, I might try turning her bike into a fixie to discourage this) you are tightening it, but grit will be getting in and grinding etc. it is possible to do further damage to the BB (the stock BBs aren't much good, but are a lot better than 150miles) and in theory I guess the treads that hold it in, I'd not want to do huge mileage like that, but doesn't sound like that's a danger.
In the short term, if my only transport, I'd still ride it - but we all have different risk thresholds, not my fault if it hits the fan, I'd actually fix it (but then I have the tools)... yada yada yada.

I'm Intrigued as to why a few people obviously seem to have (or had) the same issue. I'm presuming the OEM spec part isn't great. I will continue to ride her until she gets fixed - just wanted to make sure that both the pedals don't simultaneously drop off! In future if this is a weak link I will obviously replace it. Am I right in thinking that they do sealed bearings for the bottom bracket? What do people generally upgrade with? I don't want this to be a regular fault! Lol.

Simply looks like chain clipping on front mech' - we know from past experience on here that people struggle to get their head around adjusting them at first but here we go ... ... if you're not confident in tackling it, then bring it to me (about 15 miles from Bristol, near Thornbury) and I'll fix it for you - PM me if you want my address.

Thanks for the advice and thank you very much for the offer Radcheinster - it is appreciated
I spent 4 hours trying to adjust everything yesterday to no avail.... In fact it even got to the point where the bike was stuck in one gear and wouldn't move up or down. Every time I fiddled with it it seemed to get significantly worse. I gave up at that point and contacted a mobile bike mechanic. Β£20 later today and the kind gent spent 2 hours properly aligning everything (front and rear) and replaced both the cables with new ones as well. Everything got cleaned and lubed up as well. It's like a whole new bike now!
Very pleased! Thanks again for the advice and help
Radcheinster I may well take you up on your offer in the future, if only so I know what I'm doing and how to get it all fixed when it gets out of line again.

No problem, it's not Voodoo. FWIW, I doubt it needed new cables - just indexing the gears and a bit of lube would have done it IMHO but I guess belts n braces is OK for your fella, if the guy's any good, he was simply assuming your cables were flexy and adding good ones (hopefully).

Glad you got it sorted, and for a good price, Β£20 for getting out to you, 2 hours work and giving new cables!! Wow, how does he afford to eat?? Did he also solve the original problem of the creak? Was it just dirt in the bottom bracket? ps if you wanted to keep a spare bottom bracket in your shed then this is what you would need: www.chainreactioncycles.com/shimano-un55-square-taper-bottom-bracket/rp-prod7136968mm thread by 115mm length version
