excellent link - thanks! I've been pondering my next move from Shimano 501's. I'm not prepared to drop a grand on wheels like my mate, but I'd certainly look at the fulcrum 3's or the zonda's as per the article. For the OP, 501's are a good upgrade - cheap, relatively bombproof, and cheap to fix spokes if the worst happens.

............. and for the bike-illiterate, why would I want to change wheels at all?

............. and for the bike-illiterate, why would I want to change wheels at all? A wheel upgrade is supposed to be the first and best place to start in regards to upgrading your bike. Bike manufacturers usually need to save money somewhere, lower budget and heavier wheels, cranksets and brake calipers spring to mind. Replacing the wheels for a lighter set you will notice they roll a lot smoother and sometimes require alot less maintenance.

If you are looking for good and cheap look at R501s if you can find them. otherwise go for RS010 (which are basically the new version of the R501, with the 11s freehub). I prefer my Mavic Aksiums and my fulcrum racing 7s, but they cost nearly twice as much. I am a big fan of the Mavic Aksiums too got mine from Decathlon got Fulcrum Racing 7s on my Cube - they are ok but the Mavics are nice!

have you tried switching between bikes? I keep meaning to to see how much is bike and how much is wheel.
