Has anyone had any experience with oval chain rings such as Rotor Q-rings or O-Symmetric? They look quite interesting and I am tempted to buy a set. Any opinions in whether they are just a bit of a gimmick or you would get genuine noticeable improvements from using them. If not I guess they look quite odd so would be a conversation starter! Cheers

FRom what the pros do, looks like it's a bit of a personal thing. Some (e.g. Froome) seem to think theres a benefit, others think not (Wiggo changed back to round).

Shimano tried this back in the 90s. It was called Biopace. There's an interesting piece by Sheldon Brown on the subject

Yeah i do need to stick to a schedule, been lacking a lot recently. Suns starting to come out so the fitness will come flying back along with it. The reason i ask was because one of the teeth is broken on my chain ring so was just exploring my options before just purchasing a replacement

I don't fancy them myself, as wobbly circles ain't my thang - either a whole new crankset if you can find one on offer, or find a new individual ring; I bent a centre on the Sora triple I once had (couple of years back) - just bought a new ring; outer rings are more expensive if I recall correctly; you may find someone here has a spare to offer if you're stuck.

I think I might still have an old Shimano Oval chainset tucked away in a shed somewhere if anyone wants to give it a try?

oh that's not good! Think i'll give them a miss then and stick to the conventional round rings! Think a replacement Shimano 105 50T ring from the LBS was about Β£30 anyway.

I think it may of been direct from the manufacturer I think the issue is basically two fold. 1, I think the chainring is bent out of flat/true ie it wobble in and out and 2, the teeth design is not compatible with 10 speed. it was basically merde and shifting from big to small would be highly unreliable. The chain would fall inbetween the chainrings. it hard to tell but half the depth of the tooth is missing and has left metal shavings all over my bike. this is after 50miles? the tooth was about to come off really. could be something I have done but think its just poor design. really wanted it to be good but...

One of the lads in the club has q-rings and swears by them, he even did the TCR (transcontinental race) on them. I'd love to try them although I'm unable to due to compatibility issues with my stages power meter. Funnily enough, Rotor also make clever marketing chainsets with their logo in the middle designed to make the optical illusion of asymmetric rings and I often wonder if the pros are riding them instead of actual q rings (it's really hard to tell the difference at 90+RPM).
