If you have a look at reputable websites you will see the Triban bikes have a very good write up, there is nothing wrong with the other bikes you suggest, it's all about value for money. If you aren't used to riding a road bike the BTWIN fit 500 may be worth considering. It's very close to the Triban 500 but a flat bar which makes it a more relaxed style. You could try a Triban 500 SE for a measly £330 it's an amazing amount of bike for that money. www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/reviews/road-bikes/btwin-triban-500seThat's true, which is why it was my main choice at first... I am used to riding a road bike, it's just that it's been years since I last did that's all. And I'd rather spend an additional £70 and get the Soro instead of the microshifters it's either the Triban 500 or the Alur, but might go for the 500 as the cheaper entry model!

I ride as a commuter in all weathers, and wouldn't advise a allur for commuting - yes it is a great bike and a bargain, but... 1) - it will get stolen 2) - the components will be wet often, and after a day at work arriving home frozen and cold, im not always 100% good about cleanaing and maintance. 105 components are expensive to replace. the 500se is a bargain for 330 quid, a great ride. however, if your commute is on city roads rather than country hills - is a road bike the right choice? no comment about others =P Let's forget about the commute, everyone advised me not to park it at the Reading station so I think I'll stick to either walking to the station or using my kick scooter. I'll use the bike for weekend exercising...

In which case, definitely the Alur.

If you can make the odd evening ride, pop me a PM, we have a facebook group of Reading based riders, and a specific one for "evening rides" (I rarely can do weekends due to childcare).

I would love that, thanks! Though it depends on the time... Since I commute back from London I'm not back until 7-8pm if I leave work on time, sometimes I stay late!

We'd normally be off in the hills (or flat lands to the south) by then, but you'd be welcome in the group for when you are around.

ok - well, the answer depends on how much you want to pay.
500se or allur - both good bikes at good prices

Go and have a test ride on all of them, then pick the one that is the most comfortable and you like the look of. Zeb

I'm looking into getting a bike for a possibly a short commute from my house to the Reading station (though for some reason I was told it's not safe to park it there even underground!) and mostly for exercising on weekends. My budget is around £600. Any suggestion is much appreciated. Thanks reading carefully what you say, some points: >deca offers mutch more than other brands in your list (specs are clear) >IMHO triban 5 or alure are not the right bike for "short commute" - station parking - 30 Km excercise on WE. -my suggestion: buy a triban 300 (a great bike!), then if you will go serious about cycling, think to second bike for the WE 80-100 Km rides

I'll use the bike for exercising only. I'd still rather just pay for the Alu 700 since it's not that much more expensive and they have an offer on it now. I'm going to test ride it this weekend and decide Thanks!
