I'll report back Chris!
I have one of those top tube bags which has a clear pouch in its lid for the phone so should be OK.

I have a cheap top tube bag that holds the phone too (although it is wearing out at the front end where it meets the stem) but I find it's a bit too far back for ease of viewing. The waterproof bag and mount I got from Lidl should allow the phone to be mounted both portrait and landscape which might be useful for navigation. We can compare notes.

Well strava and Osmand run together happily, just recorded a 30 minute session with both on in a Cat 966! 4.4mph avg but strava doesn't record tonnage dug...... Wonder if you can get a bucket weigher Bluetooth dongle.......

There's not that many other options round that price point. I'm loathe to spend £400 odd on the 810 bundle for something like that. My 810 worked out at less than £300. Deca & Wiggle were selling the head until for £220 and then i got the sensors from Halfords when they had 10% off. I could have got the 1000 performance bundle from Halfords for about £365. I hear you, but that's twice as much as getting a 500.

Quite right but was just pointing out that they can be had for less than the £400 odd you quoted.

Edge 500 performance bundle - www.chainreactioncycles.com/garmin-edge-500-red-hrm-and-cadence-bundle/rp-prod82251I think CRC do 10% for British Cycling members so could save a bit off that if apporpirate.

Question - if you got an 810 and didn't get the performance bundle, does it do speed via GPS? It's an option to do headset plus hrm for c. £250

It's an option to do headset plus hrm for c. £250 Yep, it runs off gps, you can record your ride with just the head until same way you do with a phone that had no Bluetooth or Ant+ sensors and just add your sensors as and when. I ordered mine right away from halfords as there was 10% off but I could have run it without them.

I've got the 810, awesome but of kit. Great for maps, great for stats. I got this for Xmas, think the missus found a good deal on the head until. I've since picked up the the Ant+ HR, speed sensor and cadence sensor, think i paid about £70 odd from Halfords when there was 10% off then another 10% with BC. These are the newer versions not the ones that come in the bundle deal which seem better and easier to swap over to a different bike. I downloaded the open maps and stuck them on a memory card i had lying about (think it was from an old phone or something). I've since got hold of the Garmin maps and to be honest not really sure which are better, the Garmin maps do change colour at night and you can use them in the automotive mode (3D type navigation). I got the performance bundle but bought the new cadence and speed sensors because they are easier to transfer. I downloaded full UK mapping for free from herehttp://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/05/download-garmin-705800810.html

Yes, i did the same and got the maps and installed them using DC's guide. I've since found the actual Garmin ones and added them too. Did these not come with the performance bundle?

does the 500 upload and populate strava? yes, it syncs from garmin connect to strava or you can also do a manual file upload if you wish

It needs to be done via the computer tho, the 510/810/1000 can sync via bluetooth to your phone and do it that way.

No, performance bundle is unit, hrm and speed/cadence sensor. No maps. Did you pay for the garmin maps? Are they any better than the free ones?
