definitely something on the road he hits, I've tried slo-mo-ing it and it looks like the front wheel flicks it up and it must wedge in the chainset/rear wheel and the back of the bike very abruptly stops.

That guy directly behind him did really well to stay on his bike. Slow motion frame by frame is well worth a look. Kudos to the fella.

looks like a piece of pipe flicks around the front spokes and wedges against the rear of the front fork which is why the wheel buckles as he heads over the bars

figured out how to frame by frame it... the bar wedges between front wheel and his left foot. OUCH!

That was really a nasty crash. Feel it for the rider. Wondering how he didnt see the stuff ahead? He was looking ahead from what I can see.
