Hi, the day when I own a Triban is ever closer, as I have won an eBay auction for a Red 3. All looks good, and due to collect relatively locally at the weekend. However, I mentioned to the seller that I'd prefer to pay cash on collection, and pointed him to any number of links stating that is in the sellers interests to settle using this method, and he says he would like to be paid PayPal.
Is there any legitimate reason a buyer would only take paypal over cash - unless he 'really' needs the money before the weekend?
Should I be suspicious - I am naturally?

The only reason I can think of is that they may have had problems with buyers not turning up and want to make sure you are genuine. However, although PayPal has built in fraud protection I wouldn't part with any money until I had seen the bike. If the sale falls through because you insist on paying cash then that would really be suspicious.

Suppose he might be worried about you paying with counterfeit notes. If anything PayPal is safer.

Maybe he wants to use the paypal funds on another purchase without reataching a debit card to his paypal? Perhaps another auction before the weekend? Unlikely but possible.

Fair comment this does work both ways I guess, time wasters and back peddling could be a seller's genuine concern (either rightly or wrongly, depending on the sellers clarity of condition description etc). My recent frame purchase was convoluted due to the evaporation of original winner, then I missed the second chance to buy e-mail and after many PMs and messages sent via people who knew the seller on here, we staged a synchronised re-run of the auction and my purchase via immediately using the 'buy now' option; the PayPal and eBay rules did give piece of mind (both ways).

I've sold lots on ebay and understand why buyers want to use paypal as this gives them extra security if the transaction goes wrong (buyers gets money back from PayPal, then PayPal get the money back from the seller). As a seller I've often ended items early and arranged with the buyer for cash on collection, I basically use ebay as a free advertisment. I sold a ruck of caravan gear that way including a Β£300 awning. Personally I'd not be suspicious of someone insisting on PayPal, you get the security for the payment and they take a hit paying PayPal fees.

Bearing in mind most transactions of size have a proof of posting aspect, which you wont have, and thus you may worry about paying in full, then the guy not being there but saying "Oh yes paypal he turned up and took the bike" thereby snookering your refund.... How about..
When you send money through paypal it has a section to add comments. In the comments section if you ar ereally worried you could add something along the lines of "This payment made on the basis of collection by hand and swapping of signed receipts at that time as proof of collection". Might not be enforcable but adds a bit of extra security your side.
I do think paypal generally favours the person paying the money and the responsibility is useually on the seller to prove the delivered/provided the goods so I dont think this is necessary but just maybe to add a bit of confidence for you.

Or if got ebay app on your phone then could go and look at the bike and if fits/all ok then pay via the ebay app (using PayPal) there and then in front of the buyer. Have cup of tea for it to register on his account as paid and then ride away. I do understand both sides - obviously you don't want to pay via PayPal before collecting/seeing bike and seller way to worried that you use counterfeit notes or similar.

Agree, do the transaction when you get there and checked the bike over.

All, many thanks for the reassurance. Have suggested to the buyer that once inspected can either pay cash or PayPal inmediately, whichever his preference. Fingers crossed for a good purchase!

So to complete the story. After chatting over the weekend agreed to pay cash, visited tonight and collected the bike. Very happy new Triban 3 owner.
