Wasn't quick enough recently, so missed out on the Triban 5 2012 in the stores, so now looking at the red 3 secondhand, however worried about the sizing. I am 5' 6.5" with an inside leg around 29.5" - would the 54 frame be too big for me? I would prefer to stick to standard wheels, but not by sacrificing comfort. Went into Halfords recently and tried their 51/54 and the 54 in there did seem a little stretched, but I'm sure I've read that Tribans come up a little small?
i have seen a couple of 3's locally that are almost new (a 51 and a 54), and going for around Β£200, but as secondhand don't think I'll get a trial run on them!

I am about your size with possible slightly longer legs and ride a 54. I have fitted a shorter (80mm)stem and its OK for me. The 51 has 650 wheels rather than the industry standard 700 which limits the opportunity to upgrade and the range of tyres available.

Why not pop into your local decathlon and try any of the Tribans instore for size as all the same frame geometry. As phred1812 says you can always swop a stem for a shorter one. My son is about your height on a size 54 with an 80mm stem

I'm your height and ride a size 51. It's comfortable for me now but I've often thought that I might be better on a 54. The 51 has, at times, felt too small. It also took an age to find decent wheels to upgrade. If you can try a 51 and/or 54 before buying that would be your best bet. You can always fit a shorter stem if you feel too stretched on the 54.

I'm the same height with longer legs and am very comfy on the 54 with a 90mm stem. If you can its much better having the 700c wheels, shorter stems are very doable.

The standover height is the issue, there's very little difference in the frame length between 51cm and 54cm although the 51cm comes with a shorter stem as standard. If you can stand over the frame on a 54cm go for that.

All, many thanks for responses. Coincidentally was passing the Edi store today and popped in and tried both. Just had clearance on 54, but excellent staff member had a 500SE on the turbo so had a shot of that and seemed fine - will be a case of trying for a while and swapping stem if necessary. Now tracking a 54 on EBay, fingers crossed!
