Interesting thread. I did around 1500 miles on my own before I felt anything like ready to go out in a group. I was invited, through a friend of my wife's, to join up with a small group of school dads who meet up on a Sunday morning early-doors to go out for a ride. I'm now, after ten months or so, one of the two main organisers. It's very relaxed and informal and we generally cover anything between 30 and 70 miles at between 15 and 17mph, depending on weather/time constraints. Everyone is of a similar age (family guys with primary school age kids) and there are no racing snakes, knobs or egos. We're not looking to get too big (nothing worse than doing 50 miles and seeing nothing other than someone's back wheel), so our rides generally have half a dozen or so out. Nice and sociable, but a good workout too.

I'm quite tempted to join a club when I move back to Kent in the new year. I've been doing some mountain biking with a group over the summer and it is nice change to head out with some other people I think.

I've often been tempted to join the Gloucester Cycling Club, but have no idea how many club rides I'd actually be able to make it on, so have debated whether it would actually be worth it. Plus the club colours aren't great! I go out for rides "as and when" I get a chance. Usually on my own or with a mate if he's free, but either way I'm happy. I actually like riding on my own - I was worried I'd find it boring and scary to be alone with my thoughts and wouldn't entertain the idea of listening to music (unlike when I'm running, which I struggle to do without music), but I find myself thinking about cycling and am often too busy concentrating on the traffic. I have enquired with the Gloucester Tri Team about joining them, as it will give me some focus and motivation to train (particularly in the pool) over the winter as I plan on doing 4 or 5 triathlon's next year.

One of the guys I used to work with recommends Eastgate Cycles. They do some nice rides (every Wednesday evening) and have 3 different groups - Fast, medium and 'chilled'. He keeps telling me that from looking at my Strava I wouldn't be out of place, so you would have no problem.

I've joined a local club. South borough & District Wheelers. Β£20 membership plus affiliate CTC membership as a prerequisite of being a member. They have 2 or 3 rides every Sunday of different paces. Going to head out with them for the first time this weekend. www.southborough-wheelers.co.uk
