Hi folks, simple curiosity. A work cooleage introduced me to runkeeper which has road cycling as an option. Tried it and thoroughly impressed. But most people here seem to use Strava which as far as i can tell is essentially a similar/same thing.
Is it just that people on the board use Strava to all be able to friend each other? Or is there some fundamental difference between runkeeper and Strava that im not aware of? Thanks Alex
Ps did some searches first for runkeeper in thread titles

All about the power of 'Segments' and despite people pretending it's not all about competition (and yes, I remember saying this at first), it is also about being a bit competitive in your locality - the shear number of good riders using it (particularly in the UK) means you can measure yourself against the best in your area (including pros etc.) - get a podium or a KOM among the fast crew and I guarantee it will make you pleased with yourself. You can also see how you climb the tables, starting out 400 ish in a 450 ish long table on your local segments will gradually translate into making it into the top half, then top third, then top 50, then hopefully even higher. You'll also learn if you're a sprinter, or a 'rouler', or a climber, just by knowing how you stand in the tables generally - the quantity of people for comparison makes it fairly decent indicator (some areas are more remote and not quite representing the bell curve so much but it still applies, as there's usually 15 or 20 people on even the most back of beyond places). ...and it's pretty social of course.

Ah I see, so mostly about the way it tabulates comparisons with friends and neighbours, good to know thanks.
Ps: Any way i can transfer a ride over from runkeeper to strava? Either download/upload or manual input?

It's mostly about segments, but Strava also shows a bunch more data than RunKeeper. I sync all my rides and runs to both from Garmin Connect, and very rarely look at RunKeeper anymore.

Then in Strava, go to Upload -> Choose Files -> select your rides and upload.

If it's not on Strava it didn't happen.

...and to get it officially sanctioned, it then needs to be on veloviewer.com !

...and to get it officially sanctioned, it then needs to be on veloviewer.com ! Although one of the very few downsides to veloviewer is the way it 'kindly' lets you know how many places you've slipped on your segments, especially on a day like today when the Everyman and his dog seems to have been out on his bike. Another 20 places lost on a couple of New Forest segments. All good grist for the Strava mill...

Kind of par for the course, keeps it relevant and progressive - I don't often slip mote than 1 or 2 places on the local ones now, unless a race goes through, the remote ones gradually drop off the top 100 that count towards your rating.

So im on Strava now and the info it presents is better than runkeeper. But a colleague also joined and on this evenings ride it stopped for them... is that common or is it more likely an issue with their phone (or the bag the phone was in)?
Would appreciate peoples thoughts.

Did the Strava application stop running or was it paused somehow? I've had it crash twice in logging 11,000 miles. Samsung Galaxy S3
